Tell me, the pic with the Armco.... to me it looks like the Armco is set really low compared to what I'm used to.... is that normal... or is it just that it looks that way in the pic?

Yes the Armco is that low.  It would do little to stop a vehicle.  That's pretty normal for backroads.  They' better/higher on the US routes and the highways.

We usually refer to it as a guard rail or safety rail.  The concrete ones that separate the highways are often called "K-rails."
