Those are for radiant heat. It's very popular over here because of the efficiency. If the floor is warm the house feels warm, assuming it isn't drafty, even at temps that would otherwise feel chilly.

morning btw

We have heated slabs here in Aus, is that what you're referring to? If so I'm familiar with it. My mate in Canberra (very, very cold in winter) has it and they really crank it up. so much so that mid-winter we're in t-shirts. His kids are in shorts!

Yup...a heated slab. That's what it looks like before the concrete buries it.

Ok, so there's electrical elements in there, or does heated liquid from a boiler get pumped through?

I reckon I need another look at the pics! Lol!

On second look at the pics, I see the tubes are much thinner than I previously thought.

They do make electric radiant, but those are for heated water.

The slab temp runs about 90F.

The boiler doesn't need to run very long, or at a high fire rate, to keep it at that temp.

The Jotoba looks pretty sweet as well.  ;) The color is very similar although the grain is different.

A few years back I was labouring on a swish house with my brother in law when between jobs.

The house we were working on (bluestone paving) had just had that type of heating retrofitted (not into the slab obviously). Very expensive to do, but these folk were living in one of Melbourne's 'finest' suburbs, so cash wasn't a problem.

They had a large gas water heater type unit/pump that did the work. All computer controlled and such.
