this issue was all on Paul however.

We turned the bike back into a 750 and all was well.

Norton either changed the stroke, or the stud pattern/bore on the 850 to get the extra displacement. I don't know which.

The studs on the overbored 750 were so close there wasn't enough surface to hold the head gasket in place.

The head gasket would blow and the combustion gasses would melt the fuel lines.

Very spectacular.

Indeed.

Then there was the Yamaha 360 single that would shear the flywheel key for no apparent reason on shutdown...

and either launch you across the shop, or give you a compression fracture of your right leg on restart.

The BSA 441 Victor would do the same...but that wasn't an anomaly...it was normal. :P

I had a Briggs and Stratton powered Rover ride-on mower which would do the same thing.

Fortunately..

one day....

it threw some other major internal component through the side of the crankcase  ;D
