I think they require that you must have some combination about yourself that;  you only bathe twice a week at most, listen to the greatful dead, grow pot, have an alternative energy source, grow a large garden, have a vector attacting mulch pile, live far away from the county building department.

That's a bit judgemental, even for you, Dave. To be fair, they are low cost, and extremely efficient for heating and cooling. I don't think I'd recommend one for Dave due to what he wants to do in it.

I know the surfaces are covered in cementious products, but even I wouldn't want to be welding and heating stuff in a straw building...and I may be a pyro.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a cave.  Outside of that a Quonset Hut completely tricked out on the inside could be fun.
