Quick hello, got the tank & airbox off the Monster, now to get the carbs off & change out the tubes!

JM
I don't remove the carbs. It may be easier for you if the stock phillips head screws are in there. They can be a bear.

Plus, awfully quiet here today ...

I used a T-handle phillips and got those off.  However, I noticed both my rubber diaphragms have cracks.  I'm thinking that is bad.

It is.

If they're perforated it will cost.

Before you put the airbox back on completely, run the bike and make sure the slides lift when you give it throttle.

A delay is normal, but they should lift fully with a handful.

I can see daylight through two cracks on one diaphragm and through one on the other.  They've about a half inch or so.  I'm guessing they're not going to pull the right vacuum...

I just looked them up with Ducati Omaha's online system...  $150.99 each.  Holy cow.

Do a search in the tech section, or pm howie.

There's a Yamaha model that uses the same carb.

I bet they'll be lots cheaper. Another option would be to put a wtb in the parts wanted section here. Lots of people have upgraded to flatslides and have Mikunis laying around.

Thanks for the link!  I also located a complete set of Mikunis with the stage 3 jets on a 750 that's being parted out for $80.  No guarantee the the diaphragms are ok, it's just as old as mine.

I'll not be pulling the carbs next time like you mentioned.  Now that I know what I'm looking for/doing in there I'll leave them in place.  The throttle cables are a pain to disconnect.

$300 for two pieces of rubber is stupid.

I'd price new diaphragms before I bought a set of 12 year old carbs for two rubber parts...that's just me.

I agree on both accounts!   I'm off to my thread in Tech to post the differences between the old & new tubes.  It was noticeable just looking at them.

If you had worn needle jets and bad diaphragms...you're going to think you put flatslides on it. [laugh]

Yea, I did have noticeable hesitation when I twisted the throttle.  My wife's 1988 Hawk had better throttle response that the Monster had.  It was feeling really sluggish on the last ride before I parked it for the re-work.

Lots of peeps moving to KTM.

Still...not a Monster.

Eh, who am I kidding I took another ride today and there's likely no way I'll find another moto that will make me happy like this one does.  This thing makes me wheelie happy. I just get weary of replacing parts that likely have a lot of life left in them.
