This is a good thread indeed. Lots of great info here.

One of these days I would love to build an AR (along with everyone else I'm sure)

I spent a little time this evening priming some .45acp cases.

I find it relaxing.

Is that foot a DPMS model? [laugh]

Nice hardware! [thumbsup] This is always one of my favorite no-moto threads.

You sticking with iron sights or thinking groovy optics? I just slapped one of Leupold's Mark AR 3x9 mil dot scopes on my latest AR. GG&G Dominator 16" 1 in 7 full floater, Rock River lower and ARMS quick release rings. I'm real happy with it. Never have put a scope on an AR, always red dots. Reflex II or Aimpoints. There are a couple of wild hogs out there with my name on them!!

The gun forum I belong to requires a foot or they post fat chic pics......

I haven't shot it yet and I can't wait.  I just ordered 1,000 rounds from Palmetto State.  They have PMC reloadable for $309/k and $319 for penetrators.

I'm staying with iron sights for the time being.  When the apocalypse comes, batteries for other sights will be in short supply.....(that and the build tapped the firearm fund dry for the time being).  I've fired several with eotech's and dig them.

No need for batteries with an ACOG.  ;)

HMMMMM, no batteries you say.

I know they say you spend your money on the optic, but that would cost more than I have into this build!

Just throwing it out. Our guys use a mix of EOTech, Aimpoint, ACOG, and the new ELCAN. The ACOG works well for both
CQB and in the sandbox for reaching out a bit.

Good stuff. Advice is always welcome.

The ACOG is nice, but my eyes don't handle the transition from natural sight to the magnified (however so slightly) view you get from the optic.  I'm a big Aimpoint fan myself for general purpose carbine work, but prefer the ACOG for SPR applications.

For CQB distance the EOTech wins, hands down. Virtually indestructible, (unless you fall out of a chopper). Also if you have a front sight post, even if your batteries die, you can still be accurate. Unless you are doing HR.  ;)

I agree that the theory that the Eotech uses is really nice, but haven't been impressed with the reliability of the electronics from the ones that I have used.  Granted, these were an older model, and I have not tried the 553 models, or newer.

I've got a 552 in my HHG shipment making its way up to Alexandria.  It will probably be for sale as soon as I get up there.

I'm really liking the Leupold scope on my AR. The rest of my ARs are either iron sights or red dots. But as I said, I've had good luck with Trijicon Reflex sights (no batteries) and Aimpoints (batteries). Lots of good stuff out there for sure. Have many friends with EOTech holographic sights and they love them! I've shot their guns but have no personal experience with those sights. Good luck with whatever your "gun fund" can afford.
