You might not make it to the 00 rounds. Those things are fast and they're not happy when you shoot them.

We are wandering a little off topic but I have to tell this one. My brother has some property southeast of Dallas as does one of his good friends. They are always talking about their wild hog problems. My brother has said that his place at times looks like it has been carpet bombed due to the hogs rooting up everything.

Earlier this year several of the local farmers and ranchers pooled their money and hired a pro hog killer. Catch is this guy uses a helicopter! It's a father and son team. The Dad is an ex military chopper pilot and his son was maybe in his 30s. Dad flies over the thick brush and flushes out the groups of hogs and Junior sitting on the edge mows them down. I'm sure he's harnessed in for obvious safety reasons. My brother and his two boys were there to watch the festivities.

He told me the son had an AR-15 and a AK-47, both semi auto. And the fun part (besides tearing into a few hundred hogs!) was the guy had a small camera (like we use on our bikes) mounted to the forearms of the rifles and they were going to make a DVD of the "hunt" and sell them!

Total body count was over 300 hogs from giant boars all the way down to poodle size piglets. That put a damn good dent in the local population! But since they have no natural predators (expect armed people in choppers!) and that part of the state is ripe in Trinity River wetlands and thick brush they probably have already bred fast enough to replace the hogs that were shot!! Apparently there are so many hogs in the state it keeps these two guys constantly busy. I don't know what type of chopper it was but the Dad had two of them. Those can't be cheap!! I think they charged $300/hour and flew about 4-5 hours each day, a total of two days. Talk about a fun job!!! [thumbsup] [bacon]

22 hogs in a night barely make a dent. That's why hogs are hunted all year around. That's a lot of [bacon]

I've never gone with him on a hunt since he would take his gf and her kids along, but now that they are out of the picture I'll probably go with him and most likely use the .223. I might actually chip in to get the M1A1 if it comes to that.

First shot placement is always critical.  How far away are they shooting the hogs with the .223?

Is it typical to hunt off tree stands or do they walk alot?

Mostly walking. Tree stands are for pussies  ;D

I would say that they were shooting around 50 yards. From what I understand, they generally don't charge unless they your blocking their escape, but I think it better for them not to see you.

Sows can get a little fussy when they have their kiddos with them. A couple a guys were doing barb wire fence work on my brother's place several years ago and they were rushed by a big sow. They boogied up a tree to stay away from her, they couldn't make it back to their truck since she was coming from that direction. They saw her come out of some nearby woods but made no threatening moves at all towards her. She just snorted and rushed them. Up in the tree they could see some piglets from where she had come from. Probably just trying to scare them away from the kiddos more than trying to do them any real physical harm. Still, I for sure would have been the first one up that tree!! [thumbsup]

I know that wild hogs are pretty fearless, but I would imagine the dragonsbreath would make one turn and run like hell.  Have you ever seen one of those rounds go off?  And if it stood its ground, you already have dinner cooked.   [thumbsup]

Also, M14s are only mil-spec and are select fire capable, so in fact different from an M1A.

Why the shorter range buckshot before the slugs?

In NH we kill pigs with a 22.

Granted it's not a 'hunting' situation...

but...

You guys need to spend more time at the range.  [evil] [cheeky]

In case they make it to their car and try to drive away. [laugh]
