Ive been on the lookout for a mid to late 90's up to early 2000's chevy 4x4 ext cab truck.

They all seem to be in the 5-8k range

Today I found a 2001 ext cab 4x4, z71, spray in bedliner, all power, heated leather, 141,000 miles at a lot for $7500

While talking to the guy, he eventually volunteered that they might be tempted to sell with an offer as low as $7000.  They've had the truck on the lot a while and it's going to auction next Tuesday.

Further talking to him about the auctions i learned:

When they have vehicles a while, they go to auction.  They apply profits from vehicles they make money on at auction to vehicles they don't make money on at auction (ie they loose money on some)

Trucks are outrageous right now.  They originally had this truck at $10,900 with no action.  They mark it down (green numbers indicate this) just to move it after a while.  If it still doesn't sell it goes to auction.

Which brings us up to now.

I'm gonna go back Monday and look it over more closely and test drive it.

Im thinking of offering $7000 out the door to see what they do (this is an offer of $6580 before tax.)  PA has a 6% sales tax btw.

My logic is that if it is about to go to auction, where they may very well loose money on it, it would be better to sell at zero or low profit now then loose money on it at the auction.

Am I nuts?  Kbb values it higher on all points than the $7500 they're asking.

It is a nice truck, and I am prepared to walk if the deal isn't right.  This is also a cash deal if it matters.

It looks pretty much like this:

I've considered Fords as well, but I never clicked with the looks, and I've had a couple Fords that didn't treat me well.  We'll, it's not that, it's more that I hated the design once I was well into their innards to repair things.

I don't fit in S10's or Rangers so they're out.

Thoughts?

I think you should buy sumthin' with less than 150K on it. ;)

It has less than 150k

I don't care about mileage.  I can fix things that wear with mileage.

A body man i am not.

I take paint off of things, I don't put it back on.

141/150...

same thing. ;D

IMO used trucks are waaaay overpriced right now.

No value.

I'd beat up a dealer on a new one and stretch on the money before I paid 7K for a 100+K truck.

nate speaks the truth....unless its a diesel. then the miles are almost irrelevant.

i think you would be better off to find a private party sale...
or try nates tactic with a chevy dealer.

new ones aren't cheap either and that wouldn't allow me to do a cash deal.

There aren't any rebates of significance on new trucks around here.  Im friends with a guy who's a salesman for a local GM dealership and they don't even have any ext cab 4x4's on the lot since GM shut the lines down.

All he has are work trucks.

cash deal is important, I don't want to owe more ;)

right there with you dude!
go for the private seller. they know they will get more from you than a dealer will give them, and you should be able to get a truck without that dealer markup.

I'll take a look to see what's out there again.  Been looking and watching the market for 2-3 months now.

How about this one?

I could sell that cap.  Fixing the ac and the window are cake jobs.

Price is sure right ;D

oh c'mon it's not like a Ford would ever get that far ;)

[laugh]

There's a 2001 2500HD in the local paper for $7k but mileage is not listed in the ad . . .

Popeye the Sailor

I's have to agree with nate-those trucks are high mileage, and probably no end of abuse.

I'd be poking the dealers right now for a cheap new one.
