You should have some sort of sprocket retainer plate.  On my 900 and 05 620 it was a small metal plate that was cut so that when in plate properly the teeth of the plates matched the raise sections of the shaft splines.  That plate was secured to the sprocket via two screws.

You should have had to remove something like this to get your stock sprocket off - what became of it?  My 1st thought it that plate's gone missing for one reason or another.

You haven't told us what year of Monster you have, or even if it is a Monster.  I'm also assuming that it is a Ducati with the clip that holds the sprocket in place using two small screws.

I've had two different failures on my ST2 with that.  In on case, one of the two little bolts broke, then the clip broke, allowing the sprocket to slide around on the shaft.  In the other case, the replacement clip somehow wore all of its teeth to the point that the sprocket was able to slide inwards on the shaft.  I need to regularly check that clip now to make sure that it doesn't break or wear out again.

So are either of these things what happened to your bike?

sorry its an 08 Monster 695 and i did put the little retainer plate back on. the chain is actually sliding outward away from the engine bang head. could it be that the tension is too tight?

Maybe you could take a digital photo of the problem, because I can't figure out what is actually wrong from the description.

did you adjust the eccentric?

'08 M695 doesn't have one.

Perhaps you didn't get the retainer plate engaged in the groove on the output shaft?

i think it might be slipping out because i didn't tension it evenly? i re-tensioned the change again and took it for a ride its still slipping but not nearly as far. i'll try to take a pic of it after i ride tomorrow, i tapped it even already.

thanks

Is it possible to get the screws in if that's the case?

No, the screws only line up once the retainer is properly placed.  Unless the rear wheel alignment is WAY off, I'm at a loss. Unless the retainer looks like mine.  Mine was really worn, so if it was worn enough, the teeth on the retainer could have snapped off and are no longer holding the counter shaft sprocket in place~

It's an '08...

My 96 still has the original retainer.

Something is fishy here.

sounds like he put the retainer ring against the output shaft, but not engaged in the groove.

That's what I was trying to say.

Take the retaining ring off and slide the sprocket towards the motor.

You'll see a groove in the shaft.

Look at the retainer...it should have teeth to match the shaft.

Slide the retaining ring back on so it lines up with the groove, and turn it slightly to line up the screw holes and install the screws.
