We'd love to have the LG LED TV, but as of now its a bit too expensive. The picture quality is staggering. It's like you are really there right in front of the actors!!! Love it!

LED also uses less electricity than LCD, and also generates less heat. Might or might not be important to you.

I thought heat/electricity use were only issues for Plasma?

Monster Dave

Long term testing still hasn't shown a downside to LED TVs - but remember that plasma was out for a year or so before they realized that the lifespan for the G1 TVs was less than 4yrs. Granted they fixed the problem, but I would either buy one and love it and not worry about it and enjoy it while you've got it, or be concerned and wait which I'm sure you don't want to do!!!! (I know that I wouldn't!!!)  [thumbsup]

the LED backlight will be more uniform (across the screen) and be more consistent (brightness) over it's lifespan.

LCD vs LCD+LED backlight? the latter, for sure.

Agreed.  I've also read that with LED backlit TVs, for example, during a scene with a person carrying a torch in a dark cave, the backlighting can vary across the screen so that the illuminated person is bright while the dark background will be blacker/darker than with conventional LCD backlighting.

As far as the picture quality issues, I'm not sure that's an LCD vs. LCD+LED thing, they're both LCD TVs, the backlighting technology is just different.  I have seen the effect you guys have described before though (I think my brother told me it's called the soap opera effect), it was when watching The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray, we adjusted the TV's refresh rate (I think) to 240Hz.  It just looked.... hard to describe... bad, I guess... like a soap opera.  Maybe that was what the TV in store was set to?

I noticed when watching a blu-ray on even an LCD with any kind of CGI, the CGI usually stands out like a sore thumb. You can tell how its copy & pasted into the scene.

QuoteBut to clarify, LED is LCD. LED is just the backlight, compared with the standard fluorescent (CCFL)

I though LCD= Cight Cancelling Diode and LED=Light Emitting Diode...
So if the image is "too sharp", how will MotoGP and new Moto2 and Formula 1 races look like?... Smell the race gas?

LCD=Liquid Chrystal Display
LED=Light Emitting Diode

OK...follow-up question.  [cheeky]

Plasma or LCD, LED/LCD?  Opinions? ???

Originally I was staying away from Plasma due to heat generation and power use...however, after reading a comparison I'm not sure anymore. Plasma has much better viewing angles, which could be important in my small living room. LED/LCD also use about the same power as plasma...so if I am concerned with power then I have to go straight LCD. Longevity seems to be very similar as well. Plasma wins hands down on cost.

I'm not a gamer, and I don't plan on using it for my computer...so burn-in isn't much of an issue. New plasma models seem to have made vast improvements in that any way.

I've a 19" LCD in the bedroom, OK, is small, I have a small budget [$650.00/month salary], it has the issue that I had to set it up in a way that, it can only be seen if seated on the bed at no more than 45* viewing angle...
Will use xmas bonus to get 26" LCD for ht room, where I watch MotoGP and F1 races. Due to room size, 26", either Panasonic or LG, is largest size recommended, room size 9'x9'.
