really?
kind of disappointing...both the name and the specs.
not to mention, how will people from boston know you arent talking about an iPod? <---shamelessly stolen from a comment on another forum.
If you drive the nicest car in the neighborhood, work in a cash business, and don't pay taxes, you're either a preacher or a drug dealer...

It will sell a billion units and then in a couple of hardware generations will finally hit its stride and piss off the early adopters to no end.

Apple has a great product testing/developmet environment called the retail space. Look at the iPod and iPhone/iPod Touch as great examples of this.

I'm not super stoked about the first rendition (yeah, so it's pretty cool), but what I'm more excited about is how it'll progress in the next couple of years.

I could see myself owning one in a couple of years....right now though, I'm shopping for a new laptop, and I definitely need a keyboard as I will use it to take notes in class.  I can't imagine taking notes on a touchscreen.

there's already an external keyboard for it, it was part of the announcement.  [coffee]

I think it's cool and neat to see where it might go in a few years. BUT
why offer it with 3G and through a carrier, why not wi-fi for those of us that don't
need constant connectivity

the base units are wifi and Bluetooth enabled.

the 3G/AT&T units are $130 more.

As a person who works heavily in media and on Macs, I do not see the benefits of owning one.

I have a PowerMac in my home studio, a laptop in the living room, an iPod, an iPhone, and 2 Macs at work that I have to stare at all day.  The last thing I need is yet another large screen with which to read emails or post witty comments on Facebook.  Nor do I need a screen to read a novel; call me old fashioned but when I read I want a nice hardback with soft paper, no harsh lighting from a screen.

Knowing Apple though, I'm confident they've held back on what they've developed, making a sucker out of anyone who buys first gen.

If someone has a genuine useful purpose to these things for the average consumer I'd love to hear it.

I do like this:

I think this thing would have been crippled without some easy way to dock it.  I have my old G4 iBook set up in our livingroom for some quick/standing web browsing and recipe reference.  There is probably a niche to be filled in my household with this contraption.
If you add on controls for an entertainment system I think it makes a good overall non-office computer.

I don't like that it doesn't run OSX  :-\ Hopefully someone hacks around that soon.

Guess I should have actually read the press release (more than the specs and $) rather than just look at the pictures.

Too bad AT&T's 3g Data Network blows.

I have an ATT Air Card; it sucks most of the time.

You can already do this in most laptops if you have that device installed.

That is what I have now on my HP; just slide my sim card in the slot under the  battery and I am good to go.

I like the idea but its hard to justify $500 for something that offers so few functional improvements on my day to day life

Just started watching the iPad intro.  So far I like it.  I have to see how easy it is on the eye for reading for hours.  Got lots of PDF and wonder if that is readable on the iPad.  For reading purposes, beats carrying my macbook pro.  No, iPhone sucks for reading books and tech books.  Battery life....  So many questions.... I better get back to reading about it.
