Its a great step in the right direction. I think the future is going to be tablets and cloud computing  [bow_down] [bacon]

I'll put my data in a cloud when hell freezes over

Not only is it a bad idea, it is a huge huge huge privacy assmake the beast with two backs.  Put your data in a cloud and just let whoever pad thru it.  No, I'll do fine with it on a USB key or similar.  I don't lose shit and I have no problem backing things up.

I archive all my emails, I have email files going back to 1985 when I was using ELM and later PINE...  DOn't know why I keep them, who needs a make the beast with two backsin' cloud?  My grandma.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I just bought a decent 13" Asus ul30vt-a1 laptop for my portable needs - 10hours of battery life and a dual core proc [thumbsup]

Apple frustrates me enough with their content control model (1984) I don't think I would buy a ipad.

I went by the store and came away with less than favorable impressions.  No USB, can't use as hard drive unless unlocked, only content from Itunes, 3G through ATT which sucks the life out of my Iphone - can only imagine the Ipad, expensive as hell for a 64g version and a host of other little items.  Frankly for my money the Ibook is TONS better and only $100 or so dollars off.  This to me is an over inflated Ipod, which I expected, but at an unreasonable cost and locked to ATT whose 3g network simply sucks.

I'm fine with my Imac but the rest of their toys will need to be for others....at least until the price and features are reasonable.

you can sync your own content to the 'pad using itunes as a conduit (just like the ipod/iphone)

there is going to be a sd/cf card reader for the dock connector. not sure if you'll be able to use it as general storage, though.

regarding the cost, i'll agree that it's on the high side, but they've got a decent amount of r&d to recoup. frankly, until somebody else throws down a tablet that matches the apple user experience and battery life, apple has a bullseye on their back.

functionally, the macbook is a more capable device. it's also physically larger, weighs >3x more than the ipad, and has less battery life.

i'd say you're not the typical user.

the only "cloud" data i have is email, and i don't email sensitive information.

fwiw, i have all my emails archived up until i switches to gmail in 2004.

I would be surprised going forward if my laptop sees 10% usage.

i played with one a the store today. it does 90% of what i need, 90% of the time i'm away from the house.

I only use itunes and istore music - it just pisses me off trying to get an account to work on several computers & several logins, & not being locked down to who is logged in, etc.

For example, I see they have homeshare now & I thought that would work well on my new laptop, so I set it up - it still "authorized" the new laptop, so now my wifes acct is down to 1 left  :P - I thought it was specifically designed to not use an authorization.

Then, I started using it, but her account had to be logged in and itunes open on the host computer, and the laptop  :-\   That is stupid, so since it authorized the new laptop, I just imported all her songs onto it too and it can run independent.  But, of course, no other account on the computer can use  my wifes music, even though it is on the hard drive.  And, I have to keep the libraries sync'd.

Maybe I just don't use it enough to know how to get around these problems?  I wish the "cloud" model would be for music, then I could access my itune library on any hardware with wifi.

You can only use one computer for Itunes, yet I have multiple ones I'd like to use Itunes on, and frankly I'm sick of being wedlock to them half the time.  Seriously, didn't Microsoft catch the wrath for bundled content?  I'm not to keen on only one source for anything other than the wifey.  I purchased the unit, it's mine and not for someone else to dictate what is "approved" or not.  If chose to download something risky then it's my fault, I take full responsibility.  My Ipod is for plane rides which I'm on weekly almost and I bought my Iphone to surf the web.  I want options and it's my device so IMO opinion they can pound sand.  This is why I have my Iphone unlocked - or will so tomorrow  8)

I believe with Itunes you can authorize up to 5 computers.

I know I have 3 authorized right now.

i don't remember having to authorize when i setup homesharing. i'll take a look at it again tomorrow.

there are a few "roll your own" internet jukeboxes out there. i used to recommend simplifymedia, but they recently pulled their software from their downloads section (fueling speculation that apple would introduce streaming from anywhere).

so then how do you transfer your files from Itunes to another computer?  I tried it and plugged in my Iphoe and it told me that all files on my Ipod would be replaced.   [bang] [bang]
All I want is the ability to have them on my computers with my devices so when I travel I can download and fart around as I see fit.

Woweee.  You can authorize other computers (well, five of them) to get to stuff you own.  That is a step in the right direction.

So, this miracle device does not allow any drag/drop from, say a USB drive, if the thing had a native USB port, forces you to sync with another computer, despite the fact that the thing is, itself a real computer, albeit running a phone OS, where you can't load whichever applications you want, that only run one at a time (except if Apple writes them) but hey, check out all these cool apps you already like from the app store that you have to buy again for more money!  And if you don't like that, hey cloud computing.  Cloud!  Because not only is internet access ubiquitous, we all want to pay another $30 a month for AT&T's trouble-free service to get to content we can't manipulate offline.

Reading the caveats in the iPad FAQ is like reading a legal document that is a binding contract to Mac fanboydom.  " The undersigned accepts that this device is extremely cool, and accepts the following conditions.  1. This device is not really a computer despite being a computer 2.  This device cannot do computer things."  Ad bullshitum...  "3456.  Please sync with an actual computer, print and sign"  (The iPad thing has no *printing* capability.)

I am curious.  Those people who are using it as a desktop or laptop replacement, what have you used it for, so far?  Browsing, video playback?  How about composing a document?  How long did that take?  I have to conclude that people are buying it first, rationalizing, and figuring out what it can be used for second.

I am not looking to take anything away from anyone who has or likes this.  But fundamentally, taking a potentially cool device, crippling it and locking it down to control content delivery is ridiculous.  Forcing users to sync a computer with another computer to make the first computer usable, using the convoluted rules of iTunes, which sucks, makes it suck more.  The more I learn about the iPad, the less I like it.

By the way, there probably would be a competitor to the iPad had it not been for some respectively greedy and egotistical developers.  Search for joojoo and crunch pad if you want to read that sad tale.

I'm glad you posted, I was to lazy to write all that up. [clap]

i um, know this guy who stripped all the DRM from his entire itunes library. he could have paid for a program to do it for him, but being kind of cheap, he did it the hard way.

now all of my, i mean his music can be played on any device, transfered to any computer, used without iTunes, etc...got it all backed up on cd's too.

iPad will not replace a laptop... Yet :)

But I am really impressed by it's first attempt so far. I mean it can only get better from this point on right???

It does look like a miracle device compared to the poopoo oh I mean joojoo.

The review on end gadget was laughable. $499, Browser only, 2.5 battery life, software compared to barely being alpha, oh it has flash that is a battery hog and choppy as hell.

I am curious about the HP slate though. Hopefully they do a better job on that.

The fact is most people who dislike apple with continue to dislike apple and rather pickup a joojoo than admit apple makes some of the best user experience products out there. I am by no means a apple fanboy. I hate how they lock down there memory, battery etc but I have to admit I still have not picked up my laptop since I bought this device.

Btw they make a app for almost everything, you want to edit some heavy docs they have a app for that. If you want to remote admin your PC they have a app for it, if you want to make a artist tablet out of your iPad they make app for it :) 1000 iPad apps at launch and 150k iPhone compatible apps right now.

Sent from a iPad :)

afaik, none of the ITMS music files have drm anymore. they quit that when they went 256aac.
