okay, I've refrained from replying long enough, but if you haven't been on that section of road before, saying things like "there's something fishy... the guy with the camera put sand on the road"  (yes, I know that's not the exact quote) is just plain dumb.

That road is practically in my back yard. I know the cameraman.  He actually keeps a large pushbroom in his truck specifically to keep the roadway clean.

I won't ride there on weekends between march and november if I can help it. There are just too many idiots who just plain can't ride out there. If I do ride the Snake on a weekend, I'll get up reeaallly early and hit it before 8am.  There are crashes in many different corners on that stretch of road.  This particular corner happens to have a very wide shoulder on the inside of the turn where sightseers, tourists, and the like sit and watch the bikes and European sportscars worth 100's of thousands of $$$ go up and down the road all day long. (Fabio crashed a Ferrari in that same corner a little while back... YouTube it.)

Just above the curve is a large turnout where riders will turn around and have another go at the Snake, or just take a break. The view is gorgeous!  That's why you see a lot of people hanging around.  They're not there "waiting to see someone crash" as someone said.

The sheer amount of riders (100's and 100's) that go through this iconic section of Mulholland Drive on weekends is probably why there are more crashes on that section also. It's less than 10 minutes from the 101 freeway, and only a mile or two from the world famous Rock Store that Jay Leno is fond of frequenting.  I'm not trying to name drop or anything, just trying to explain the massive amounts of motorcycles that go through there.  It's just NUTS!  Lawbreaker and Speeddog and a few others can attest to that fact.

Anyway, sorry to come off all grumpy, but accusing people of deliberately putting sand or debris in the road in hopes the can catch a crash on camera is just asinine.

If you've never ridden that road or seen the craziness that is the Rock Store, I invite you to pm me. I'd be glad to take you on a ride through some of SoCal's most beautiful roads.  Afterwards, breakfast at the Rock Store is on me!  [thumbsup]  Ride Safe Everyone!  [moto]

Couldnt have said it better... I can think of at four or five times I road that road with Bacon and Stu (at a steadyish pace) and never have gotten close to that happening... My favorite story relating to the snake, Im in my music class and this guy sees me walk in with a helmet... "you ride?" he asks (in a cool guy tone)
"Yes" I reply
"Nice bro what do you ride?"
"A Monster 750 I reply"
"Oh nice man I was going to get one of those but they are way too slow. I crashed my CBR 600 at the Rockstorea few weeks back... I just picked up an R1"
"Ok" I replied Quickly trying to get to my class to avoid this moron.
"well if you think you can keep up on your little bike you should ride with us... we meet at about 12 at the Rockstore on Sundays"
"Ok" I say
"Also" he says pointing at my jacket "it gets hot out there so you might not want to wear a jacket."

QFT.

I went through there a few months ago for the first time and after we got to the top with the turnout I thought "Is that it?"  I am by far an excellent rider but I was expecting something much more difficult after seeing all the videos.  Maybe that was the trick?  Not being complacent?

Most of those crash videos, for the ones where they go down in the barrier, what I see mostly is target fixation.  A lot of them if the guy would just get off the brakes, turn his head and lean his fricken bike, he'd make the turn.  They stare that barrier down and blammo.

There's a kid in our local riding group that wadded up his bike there and after examining the video (which he claims he just 'lost the front end") we determined that he didn't countersteer.  As said above, no skill.  This young man joined the local Ruff Ryders so he could wear t shirts and skate shoes without getting heckled by the rest of us.

That's the majority.  Of course there will be weird instances where someone extremely skilled has a bad day.  Please don't come after me about how your buddy who used to race and blahblahblah crashed there.
My fast lap is your sighting lap.

Next sunday we're going up the 33...
I know it's Mother's Day, but that just means everyone else will be hanging out with mom and not on the road. ;)

besides, my mom lives 3,000 miles away

Time for a road trip to Cali. Free breakfast is always welcome.  [thumbsup]

We have a road out here near Phoenix that claims many bikes on the weekends. I would say from what I have seen and heard, rider skill is often the culprit in the crashes.

It isnt that asnine. Theres people out here who run fishing wire across poles and video tape people getting walking into them, or riding bicycles into them.

But you know that road more than I do, and if there is just an insane amount of sand on the road, i dont see why people still ride it. as for me, ill equip the front of my bike with a big ass fan. [moto]

I've never experienced any sand on that road.

The Mulholland Road I mentioned before with sand and rocks, while technically the same road, it about 30 miles away and in the heart of Hollywood.

The section of Mulholland in the video, known as "The Snake" is in the middle of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.  To know it is to want to ride it.  Trust me, there ain't no roads like in it NYC.   [cheeky]

I guess you missed the part where I said the photog keeps a broom in his truck just in case some dirt or debris makes it's way into the road.  There are wide shoulders on either side, so debris doesn't often get on the road. There really is hardly any sand on that part of the road anyway!

Also, think about it...  If anyone even thought of spreadin sand on the road in order to cause a wreck, and if they were dumb enough to hang around to watch, with that many riders and spectators there they would be in for the beating of their life!

Just say'n.  I've never had a problem in that corner, even when riding briskly:

Believe it or not, but I'm only doing about 30mph here.  Speed limit on this section of road is 35mph...
