Wow :o

I've only ever shot hand loads in my pistols. If anything at all seems out of the ordinary I pull the magazine, clear the chamber and make sure everything's is ok.

I only ever had a squib once but I caught it.

It looks like she fired a dud... possibly it was an uncharged case and the primer was sufficient to start the bullet head deep enough into the barrel allowing her to cycle a fresh round behind it

That's often the case. I think that's what happened to me.

I weigh each charge on the balance scale individually before closing up a round...

tedious, but accurate since it adds a deliberate manual step to the final assembly sequence

and it also avoids powder bridging issues that can occur since I use extruded IMR's for the rifles

haven't had a surprise load yet in close to 40 years of loading...but never say never

Interesting the woman it happened to posted up on youtube that she had a 7th round stoppage and chambered a fresh round

seems to think it was an OOB which would indicate some severe deficiency in the safety bridge geometry

If you look at her stance, you can tell she doesn't know how to shoot properly.  She is rocking back on her heels with each shot.

If I saw that at a range, I would just move down a ways.  I just don't trust people who don't know basic stance, it tells me they haven't been taught correctly.

But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I noticed that too.  It's like she's trying to keep her face as far away from the action as possible

no, not just that.  her upper body is back, she is bent the wrong way at the hips.  your knees should be bent and your shoulders over your knees.  putting your weight forward allows you to absorb the recoil without rocking.

That's what I was getting at.

Poor rifle.

Poor rifle.

it's a garand.  probably just bent the op rod.  replace that and a new stock and it's probably good to go.

i'd worry more about her face and the 9,928 splinters that shot into it.

A 10 lb Garand is a big awkward rifle for a small woman who has obviously been thrown into the deep end of the pool without lessons.  Gun fit is far more important for women and juniors than average or larger adult males, not just for performance, but for safety.

I'm trying to find the link for an excellent article on loading for the M1A and Garand.  Feeding these two rifles is far more complex than loading for a bolt gun.  A high primer, a case thats a bit long, fat or lumpy or a primer that is more sensitive than the milspec ones has some serious consequences.  A lot of high performance powders for the 308 and '06 have a far too slow burning rate for these gas guns and can cause a lot of excessive wear and damage also.

Article was by Glen Zideker - if anyone is interested in it, PM me and I'll send you the PDF.

You are absolutely right about loading for gas driven autoloaders

Setting the shoulder on the cases, case OAL, Primer seating and hardness, and gas pressure

all play into making a reasonably safe hand-loaded round

not to mention functional safety bridge in the rifle and proper headspace
