GUN STUFF

As long as ammo is stored even remotely propery, it will last for decades or longer.  One of the exceptions to this rule is some of the "Lead Free" primers mandated by some police departments and some military organizations - the priming compound can break down faster than conventional primers and it has been noted to be more temperature sensitive that lead stymphnate (sp), resulting in reliability issues in cold weather.

I shot a couple grouse two weeks ago with paper shotgun shells that were probably 60 years old.  With the foolishly high modern ammo costs, I found its cheaper to shoot up some of the old collecter stuff I have that is worth less than new ammo - and in many cases it performs better.

I just bought a bunch of powder that was in sealed containers from the '50's and '60's and it is working great - in a couple of instances, giving me better accuracy than I have gotten from new lots of the same powder.
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

paper wrapped shells allow more expansion so might get a little more pressure initially.

that's pretty bad about the cost of new vs collector stufff

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

While we are on the subject, I have seriously been thinking about dumping my Steyr AUG full auto. I've had it since 1989 and it's probably stupid money now. It's too damn expensive to shoot a lot in these times. Don't know if that will hurt it's value, but I assume most folks who can afford a .223 full auto can also afford the ammo.

I'll hang onto the MP-5 forever. I've got surplus 9mm out the kazoo. Also had it since 1989 and have never had to replace anything... nada, zip, nothing. [thumbsup] Been gentle on the barrel so it's even still in great shape.

Probably the two best "investments" I have ever made. [popcorn]

I keep meaning to post on this and finally remembered ...

Post a pic of the AUG :D

Believe it or not I don't own a camera. And my cell phone is so old it is nothing but a cell phone. No camera, no video.

The full auto AUGs look no different than a semi. I switched mine out to a black stock set from the standard green set. I have all the barrels. 14", 16", 20" and 24" heavy machine gun barrel. It's the standard receiver but I do have a semi with a "special" receiver for STANAG scope mount set up.

The new AUGs and knock offs have Picatinny rails. Wish my old school AUGs had that.
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

did you have any squibs or blow off a cheek?
nope.  we did shoot some paper shells so I'm betting that box was well over 20 years old and we survived.

The new SBR tok upper on my registered lower..  As it turns out, the bolt and carrier are all 5.56 type.  The only unique bits to the TOkarev round are the barrel and the mag adapter.

The gas port is about 2" in front of the chamber.

I just noticed I took pics and cut off the muzzle so you can't see how short it is...

that sight block is a fake gas block.. parts from the "dissipator" style of carbine.

oh yeah, this came in the post too:

I also love my two MKII Rugers! Both bull barrel, one blue and one stainless. Two of the best pistols I have ever owned. Not sure if I will ever need to buy another .22 handgun.

Got to shoot my friend's old High Standard HD Military .22 at his ranch in November. That too was one fine shooting old .22. [thumbsup]

One of the best little hand guns I've shot.  Cheap and lethal if needs be.

Would a .22 really be enough?

That's what I figured.

For home defense I think a good scatter gun would be the way to go.

Point and click affair.

Of course, if all I had was a pencil on hand, that's what I'd be using ;D

it really depends on a lot of things.. your skill at shooting, what your walls are made of, etc..

a typical home with plaster/wood walls makes it unsafe to use rifle rounds.. they penetrate and go thru and you can endanger your family.

bird shot in a shotgun will mess someone up from short range, but will not penetrate.  you will just have 30-40 bb sized holes in the wall.

all that being said, if your security plan allows someone into your home, then it's a shitty plan.  it should be somehting like this:

automatic lights > high quality locks/windows > alarm system >  interior automatic lights or manually controlled from your bedroom > weapon of choice

the best plan is one that prevents them from even trying or deters them from trying.  most breakins could have been stopped by merely locking all the doors and windows.

Agreed on the above.

I have a bunch of Vector security stickers up at the shop. I was considering putting some on windows and doors here even if its just for appearances.  I figure the sticker alone may deter someone.

A pair of good, loyal Dogs works wonders also, We prefer the Bully breeds. After that the aforementioned is also good deterrent. Ammo to work with Your building construction is mandatory, many LE options to choose from out there, things that don't go through Your walls or the Neighbors. Other than that a good amount of training is priceless...

i think using dogs is situational, and most people don't want the family pet on the front line of defense.  dogs frequently get poisoned or shot if it's a planned breakin.

dog should be a noisemaker only, and only after they have gotten beyond the door/window threshold.
