I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it

Yea it wouldn't be for me but the wife..  she has hand/wrist problems and with the lighter but larger round guns, I see they recoil a lot..

Maybe get a pistol you want but make sure someone makes a .22lr conversion for it. I would like to convince my wife to try that. Why she married me I will never know... she is scared of motorcycles and guns. [laugh] Anyway, it would be a nice way to teach her (your wife and mine) how to safely handle a pistol like a Glock or 1911 without the big bang and recoil. I'm still working on my wife. Actually even my step son is working to get his Mom to try it. Maybe he'll have better luck. [popcorn]

(Disclosure: I started to send this as a PM, but realized that ignorance and misinformation on my part - which I have in apparently limitless supply - could be dangerous, so this was better exposed to light & any necessary criticism.)

Nothing you offered was 'misinformation' IMO.

You may be disagreed with on some points by some reloaders...but there are probably as many opinions as reloaders...  ;D

Both of what? That leaves a lot of questions unanswered. [laugh] [laugh]

As far as the 45-70 goes, most data is broken down into three categories.  The lowest pressure loads are for the Springfield trapdoor and other similar guns, the second tier being for Winchester 96 and others and the highest pressure loads for the Ruger single shots and at the lower end of this range, the Marlin lever guns.

I have loaded thousands of 45-70's at all the different pressure levels.  The Trapdoor should be kept at the low end of the pressure ranges.  Bullet weight, in and of itself has little to do with pressure.  Lead bullets will typically generate less pressure than a similar weight jacketed bullet as it engraves in the rifling easier.

I make and use swaged lead bullets that are "Paper Patched" which functionally means that the projectile has a paper jacket that protects the bullet as it goes down the bore.  Most early black powder cartridges used paper patch bullets.  It provides great accuracy and reduced pressure.  As no lead comes in contact with the bore, there is no leading issues even using very soft bullets.  The patch shreds as soon as it leaves the bore.  I've killed several deer with the 45-70 and paper patch bullets in Marlin lever actions and have used the paper patch bullets in my 577-450 Martini Henry to put hits on a 12" Plate at 600 yards.  They work very well.

The 45-70 can be loaded with black powder or black powder substitutes but I would leave that until you get some solid experience loading first.  There are some safety and technical aspects of loading with black powder that need to be understood.  There are a number of good smokeless powder loads that will work well for the Trapdoor 45-70.  PM me if you want some details.

This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

Thanks for all the info, WarrenJ.

I've heard of "Paper Patched" bullets, but only because I've watched Quigley Down Under a million times!   ;D

Since I haven't shot the gun in 8 years or so, I'm thinking about taking it to a gun shop to make sure it's still okay to fire.

I would love to know more, so I will be sending you a pm soon.  [thumbsup]

Thanks again!  [beer]

It's interesting that Mike "Mouse" McCoy is the director/producer of Act of Valor. McCoy was featured in Dana Brown's documentary of the Baja 1000 called Dust to Glory. Mouse McCoy was an off road motorcycle racer that raced the entire Baja 1000 all by himself... no co-riders. It is a great movie. I highly recommend it! [thumbsup]

Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown who directed On Any Sunday. Guess I don't need to tell you guys about that movie! ;) [popcorn] [bow_down]

Ah, that's where I knew that name from! His P.O.V. nighttime crash in that film is freakin' absurd.

That, and the full-speed nighttime oncoming fly-by from the open-class trucks... those made me pee a little.

The trailer for Act of Valor was shown with Haywire...which featured Gina Carano in a wetsuit, and occasionally shooting stuff.  Best. Movie. EVAR!

There, brought the thread back to gun stuff.

Great action footage in Dust to Glory for sure. My 15 year old step son freaking LOVES that show. Whenever Mom is out with the girls seeing a chick movie he always asks "Can we get a pizza and watch Dust to Glory?" #2 fav is LeMans with Steve McQueen. He's a McQueen junkie!! Magnificent 7 is #3. ;)

Here's a little gun news that's pretty cool. Got $210K laying around?? [laugh]

Detail stripped my SA 1911 GI model for the first time ever tonight. REALLY enjoyed it. Found out I can do alot of the parts work I have planned myself, and pay the smithy for the heavy stuff later. This is a good revelation.  [thumbsup]
