Anyone tried the P-01?

I've got its slightly larger brother, the SP-01.  It's a great shooting pistol and feels like no other in the hand.  One thing though, P-01s are only available from the factory as a decocking model (I believe), which prohibits getting a REALLY nice trigger done on it.  Angus (at CZCustoms) started offering "tuned" P-01s for a while, and think he even offered one with a safety instead of the decocker lever.  That's what I'd go for.

Ok, I stand (partially) corrected.  Here's what you want:

Being faster than you thought possible…it feels good. No, screw thatâ€"it feels like shotgunning a gallon of adrenaline and chasing it with an all-night orgy aboard a burning Viking boat.

At the risk of heresy, take a look at the Turkish copy of the CZ -- being sold under the Tristar name.

They are nearly identical, use frame safeties, and are nearly identical.  Did I say they are nearly identical?  What's different?  The finish is better, the slide looks nicer, and they come in a full steel or a lightweight alloy frame version. They use CZ factory magazines.  Did I say they are nearly identical?

they are amazing, esp for the price.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I CCW a gen 3 S&W model 410 that is DA/SA.  Not the prettiest, lightest, best of the bunch but it does the trick.  Trigger isn't THAT bad, it isn't THAT heavy, and the price is right.  But it is the MOST reliable handgun I have owned (be it by design or luck) in that I have not had one misfire, FTF, FTE, or anything and I have fired mainly reloads with it (~3000 I would guess).  It is bone stock too, with the plastic guide rod thing and everything.

The Canik pistols are a bargain.

The CZ warranty is too. ;)

I had the chance to shoot one of the SP-01's out of Hobdells custom shop.  It was probably the most accurate, smoothest shooting 9mm I have ever shot.  The gun is a bit big to stick in your pants, but damn! it shoots!  I have a regular 75-B that is a great shooter but that SP-01 would shoot rings around it.  If concealment is not a requirement, that SP-01 is an awesome pistol.

Let me modify that a bit - I don't know if it is more accurate than the 75-B off the bags, but it was far easier to shoot accurately - better ergos, sights, trigger etc.

There's a lot you can do with the trigger of the 75 models both with and without a FPB.

Ran across an interesting over/under long gun yesterday.  I've got a neighbor that always seems to find unusual guns.  He got one in a trade that is a .357 Magnum rifle on the top, 20GA shotgun on the bottom.  Very unusual.

After recently taking an NRA shotgun safety course, I think I want to start shooting more often.
I'm thinking I'd like to do sporting clays, some skeet and also take some home defense courses, preferably with the same gun.
So I'm looking to purchase my first shotgun and I have some questions for the enthusiastic masses out here.

My questions are:
What gauge should I be looking at and should I get pump or semi-auto?
Once I get these questions answered in my head then I can do some shopping around and I'll solicit some opinions on my gun choices  .

Thanks,
jimi

Unless you have major issues with recoil, the 12 ga gives you the most versatility and is the most common.  You can get light recoil ammo for skeet and clays up to big busters for defense and hunting deer and other large game.  I've shot pumps my whole life and I like them a lot.  Some semi-autos can have issues with certain light loads as far as cycling the action goes.  Some semi-autos can be a bit more fragile.  I've broke a pile of 1100's, but Benelli Super 90's are real tough.   I have no problem shooting doubles on Sporting Clays or Skeet with a pump, but I've shot hundreds of thousands of rounds through them.  Some of the new generations of semi-autos, like the Win SIII and the new Remington (cant remember the name) work with a wide variety of loads and are very durable - also sort of spendy.

The 870s are very popular and the actual Wingmasters are very nice guns, better wood, finish and fit than the less expensive 870 Express.  I am in the minority, but I love the Winchester 1300 shotguns.  I've killed everything from doves to deer with them, ran numerous 25 straights in trap, shot skeet, sporting clays and won a pile of combat shotgun and 3 gun matches using them.  Winchester has discontinued them and introduced a new pump but I don't have any experience with it.  You can pick up used 1300's for $200 - $300.  I bought my first 1300 new in the mid-70's and its still getting used.  I think I have a half dozen or so of them.

I am not a fan of the Mossbergs.  They work and they are inexpensive, but they are a bit crude.  If you look around, you can pick up a good used gun of better quality than a new Mossberg.  Lots of people will probably disagree with me on that, but I've put several thousand rounds through various Mossbergs and have worked on them as well as a wide variety of other guns, so I am basing it off some pretty extensive personal experience.  If price is a driving factor, the Mossbergs will work.

The Rem 11-87, some of their new semi autos and the Win SIII look real nice.  My brother has an 11-87 he has shot a pile of sporting clays, skeet, deer and grouse with it  He loves it.

There are lots of good options out there, it just matters what fits you, your budget and what you want to accomplish.  Have Fun!

I am a scattergun fanatic. Taught Tactical Shotgun courses for 11 years... don't bring your 9mm to my shotgun fight. [laugh] [laugh] What Warren said is A-OK. All of it. [thumbsup] Although I do like M'bergs probably more than him. Big deal. Love 870s and Benelli Super 90s. Have too many to count. Not a bad problem to have. ;D

I don't know why I read this thread.  I have an 870 pump 12 gauge but now I want a 20 gauge semi!

you guys are the worst!

My work here is done!

There is very little you can't do with a 870 12 ga.
