Almost done...Haven't even fired it yet though.   :-\

Love those M1As. [thumbsup] My buggered up shoulder likes .223 better than .308 these days but I still dig the M1A rifles! Can't make out details in the pic, what did you use for a mount and scope?
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

Mount is a SWAN or a copy of one

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I'm thinking about rounding out my collection with a varmint rifle.  Leaning toward a Remington 700 in .308, but there are too many models to choose from.  If you were picking a rifle to take out to the range a few times a year and possibly do some hunting in the future, what would you go with?  Granted, a scope would have to be part of the package.

Ultimately, I'd really prefer an AR-15 but I'm not willing to make the concessions that CA requires.

I did a "Lego" project starting with a nib Remington 700 SPS Tactical short barrel in .308.

Jewell Trigger
HS Precision Pol/Snip Aluminum bed bloc stock
HS Precision 10 Round Mag and floor plate
20 MOA Picatinny Rail
Leupold Mark4 4.5x14 Tac Scope
Harris Bipod

with hand loads the thing is scarier better than I am,

at minimum out to 500 yards

at 100-200 yards it is boring.... popping sub-moa clusters all day

I have been thinking of building up a companion SPS shorty in .223

Best heads ever for .223 that I have tried in my AR (with an Armalite tube) are the Sierra 60 grain varmint heads

better than anything in their entire SMK line-up
This is an insult to the Pez community

Wanting to make sure those prairie dogs stay down are you?   :D
And the sugar fountain fairy swore so hard when she came to super-size that stale hope soybean; liiiike a homeless German woman. Who is this super-sizing spirit-crushing femme? And tell her I'll break a tree root up in her shrimp.

Being faster than you thought possible…it feels good. No, screw thatâ€"it feels like shotgunning a gallon of adrenaline and chasing it with an all-night orgy aboard a burning Viking boat.

The op wants .308  :-\

I'd choose .223 in the faster twist so you could use heavier projectiles

Or something in .25-06 if you really want to reach out there.

I'd need both pairs of glasses and the best scope...

And still couldn't see 'out there'.

I would stick with 5.56 or similar for a varmint rifle.  308 is just too much.  People use .17hmr for prairie dogs.

My long prairie dog shot was 820 with a 30-06.  We just got back from Wyoming a couple of weeks ago.  My wife shot two consecutively at 550 with her Rem VTR in 308.   I've shot them with everything from 22 short, 17 HMR to 50 BMG.

Day in, day out though a fast twist 223 is a darn good dog gun.
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

Even if you don't have a bad shoulder an afternoon of .308 will keep Advil's profits in the black. ;) Sold my .308 Rem 700 PSS years ago but kept the .223 version. I have never regretted it since I'm not a long range shooter nor do I deer hunt anymore. I have an older Steyr SSG and a couple of M1As if I absolutely have to shoot a .308.

rgramjet, good luck with the .308 700 PSS if you decide to sell it. Those are still very popular rifles. [thumbsup]

I hadn't considered the .223 but it makes sense.  Thanks for the input.
