Liquor/cocktail recommendations?

Okay, here it is.

My wife and I keep four types of alcohol in the house.  Beer, wine, Smirnoff Ice, and tequila.  Unfortunately, the beer is for my wife and the Smirnoff Ice is for me.  The wine is usually a Reisling, which is sweet, and if I have a margarita it's usually also sweet.  So I'm not much of a drinker, and what I like tends to be sweet.

I'd like to expand my horizons some, as the only cocktail that remotely worked for me was Seven & 7.  I discovered it in my early 20s and have stuck with that since.  It's okay, but I'd like to try something a little more upscale.

I thought I'd want to drink Scotch, cause it seemed mas macho and sophisticated.  I ordered what I was told was a good Scotch, ordered it on the rocks, and almost imploded.  Couldn't even drink it, and I was in the company of three women.  Sad.  Can't do martinis.  I like margaritas, but they're also somewhat lacking in the manliness dept.

So basically I tend to like something with some sweetness to it, and want something kind of classic.  Any recommendations on a cocktail to try or a liquor to try?  I just bought a bottle of Maker's Mark to have in the house, as I'm trying to have other liquors available in the house and that has a good conotation to me.  Was Scotch on the rocks a tactical errror?  Someone told me to start with Scotch and soda.  I don't know.

I can't stand scoth...

Vodka is my poison of choice.

try it with OJ if you like sweet.

I agree, though I can't drink any vodka straight.  All of them taste like rubbing alcohol.

I tend to also like sweet drinks.

My fav is the Long Island Iced Tea

I can drink those by the gallon :D

Since you already have the Makers, any one of these will do [thumbsup]

They are all sweet and still man card approved.

*edit*  That was supposed to be a direct link to Makers recipies but you must age verify first.  Sorry for the extra work.

The Rusty Nail might be a good cocktail for you to try.  Basically a glass of scotch (Dewars is fine),  on the rocks, with a 1/2 shot of Drambuie.

Totally changes the dynamic of the scotch, cutting its edge with a hint of sweetness.  And it sounds "manly".

Cheers!

Vodka needs an olive, tonic or oj to be good.

I prefer my liquors to be colored.

Buckethead

Vodka tonic or gin and tonic.

Vodka or light rum or tequila and any sort of fruit juice.

Dark and stormy: dark rum and ginger beer.

Brutal hammer: red wine and vodka.

White Russian: vodka, Kahlua and milk.

Arnold Palmer: iced tea vodka and lemonade.

I don't like scotch either. If I'm drinking whiskey straight it's usually Irish or Canadian.

Definitely qualifies as sweet.  Four or five in a short period of time will get you real drunk and hung over.  For the most part, sweet and dark = hangover.

For some reason, scotch tends to be nice to me the next morning.......beer and/or red wine usually ruin me the next day......especially those 11% beers that Drkwng likes to drink!  They are Damn tasty though!

With whiskey around, I'd recommend a whiskey sour.

Screw the bottled mix, and buy yourself some lemon juice instead.

Make some simple syrup. Just boil water, and add an equal amount of sugar. Easy-peazy.

My usual formula is 1 shot whiskey, 1 shot juice, 1/2 shot syrup. Stir, pour into an ice-filled glass.

Try one that way, and adjust the syrup level to suit your taste.

I love Scotch. Preferably like my women. Over 18 years old and neat.

If you want a cocktail that's easy to drink, go for a White Russian.

I also like a Tall Ship, which is equal parts Kalhua, Bailey's, and Drambuie over ice.

Maybe try my other favorite, Absinthe, if you want something potent and less "frew frew".

Arnold Palmer: iced tea vodka and lemonade.

For the record, there's no alcohol in an arnold palmer (but I imagine it would be good with it :)  )
