400 HP lathe?
Did they say it was a big block or small block?
Makes me flash on that scene in one of the Indiana Jones movie, where large round things are pursuing him.

Did you order yours?
When I was putting my time in as a wire monkey we converted a mill from generator power to the grid.
They had two machines with 500 hp motors...I forget what they did...but logs became something a lot smaller in not much time.
That's really cool.
500hp motors are huge.

The wire runs from the vault to the main panel were 4 parallel runs of 750 kcmil, look it up, about 30 feet long. Each run had 3 conductors. The cuts from the supply house were all wanted to lug around since there were 16 hunks of it. I had them all rolled out in the lot ready for the pull...and the loader needed by...that sucked.

That couldn't have been expensive.

Actually not that far off from reality...
I think I visited that plant when I was in high school, about a hundred years ago. Watching a 3'+ diameter douglas fir peeled down to a 4" core in about 30 seconds was as impressive then as it is now.

Some light milling today.
When the camera shakes, it's because I'm being burned alive by stray chips that are smokin' hot.

Are you asking why it's used at all?
Some materials and tools require it. Drilling for instance, especially solid carbide drills that flow coolant through the tool itself. It clears chips from the flutes and cools the cutting edge.

Thanks for the education...
I'm not smart enough to differentiate drilling and milling.
