looking for $4000

What year is that 900?

If you can get and share bigger photos that would be great. But if it's a 2000 that might be a 900S.

The 900S was the only monster to come from the factory with a floating rear caliper. A give away is the linkage rod below the swingarm

The 900S had carbon huggers and side covers 3-way adjustable forks and an Ohlins shock. If it is an S it's a better deal than originally one might have thought
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.
- '00 M900S with all the farkles
- '08 KTM 690 StupidMoto
- '07 Triumph 675 Track bike.

The other dead visual give away is that the Ohlins shock has an external reservoir - but I can't  tell from that photo. The angle and light make a dark spot where it might be. On a 900S it's mounted behind the shock on a bracket and is clearly visible from a lot of angles . On a base 900 the shock has no external reservoir

*edit* zoom sent me photos. It's a 900S for sure. There will have been a carbon rear hugger from the factory, so you might ask. But it is 2000 vintage CF so it's really not great by today's standards. Tended toward pun holes and yellowing

It's a better deal than thought. That shock would run you $800+ as an upgrade purchase currently

they both are about $4000 so which is best? im probably buying one of them this week unlsess some freak disaster happens

depends on the condition in person.

everything can look great on paper

1000 and 900 are pretty close engines.. that's not a ds1000 is it?  if it is, that's a +1

The 900 is a year 2000. That's the only year the S model had that rear brake and Ohlins shock

I would put a +1 to the suspension (Ohlins shock and 3-way adjustable forks) on the M900 since there's more benefit in those than from and extra few ponies in the engine.

KTM, go and check them out this weekend. Seeing the bike in person is always different from looking at photos of it. Talk to the owner, try and get a sense of how they treat their bikes, how much do they know about them. Keep researching the bikes (what are the kbb values?) I think you might be able to talk down the price of a bike if you can show the owner that you're knowledgeable.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

i am for sure looking at the 900 this weekend becasue it is close and depending on how that goes might go see the 1000 which is 3 hours away

tocino

Surely a tough call - same price and they both have lots going for them.

Carbs vs. FI - i <3 teh carbz but a good FI = fewer problems
900 vs 1000 - 900 is the classic Monster, but the 1000 is newer and it's the DS motor right?
Suspension - King Pepe has it right - good suspension is essential

The only negative to me on the 900 is why'd he change the color? I'm always suspicious of that.

So I'll echo what everyone else is saying: take a look at the 900 and if it's in good shape go for it. If he won't let you take it for a spin (I wouldn't :)) see if he'll take you for a ride around the block. Is it currently registered / titled?

If it's not 100% but close, you could check out the 1000 and possibly call the 900 guy and play the "well the one I'm looking at is 200 bucks cheaper? Any chance you can come down to 3800? I'll bring cash" game :)
