The outer got a lot better with grease from this decade. I also need to back off the brake adjuster so the shoes aren't dragging.

I'm not really very far off the bearing center line... The center of the roller is between the bearings. The roller probably weighs 60lbs or so on a set of bearings rated for 2600lbs.

I really couldn't tell where the hub ended up after it was all welded up. It looks farther out.

In that case...

The early pics were from a provisional installation that proved untenable... Cheesy

I don't have any pics of the phase that ended yesterday evening when I decided plan B wasn't working either.

I made progress today, though.

I need to add some gussets, etc. to those tabs on the inside to provide a little more rotational strength.

How much resistance do you think that electric brake will provide...and for how long?

Some, and for at least 10 seconds... I'm not planning on 100% duty cycle here.

I'm basing feasibility off of the original axle's 5200lb rating and some wild assumptions about how much a mobile home weighs. They put three or four axles underneath them, and appear to be successful in stopping half a house.

I'm sure the reason real dynos don't use them is the variability introduced as the brakes heat up. I'll at least be able to watch them fade and maybe use that info when towing a trailer... Cheesy

Well...according to the internet a double wide weighs 33K and a single is 14K.

So a single brake unit from a 4 axle trailer should be able to handle 4K.

Should be able to snub up a motorcycle engine for a bit. waytogo

You going to use a brake controller or just a rheostat to control brake voltage?

I've got a spare brake controller (or two, although I can only find one) laying around. I'm thinking I'll use that and the battery from the LeMons car with the battery charger on it... Tentative future plans might include an alternator on the dyno to do some regeneration.

Alternator could be used to add load also...if it was big enough. Grin

Got a line on an alternator "big enough?"

A quick google found a 250 Amp alternator.
Assuming that rated output is at 12VDC, that's ~4HP.

Of course, one must have somewhere to put those 250 amps.

A water pump for irrigation may be a route to explore....

so, I only need about 25 of those to make a useful difference. Cheesy

Can't irrigate, but I can charge the neighborhood's battery backups.

You can pump water in a circuit to/from a 55 gallon drum or the like.
