Ignorance is my constant companion

« on: May 07, 2015, 03:36:18 AM »

A week ago, I was pulled over by police for speeding in a 60 mph zone. He was behind me in an unmarked car, all black. Never saw him coming. I was having my last hurrah, right before going on a 2 week business trip.

I was getting close to home. So I checked the mirror to move to the exit. That's when I saw those pretty blue and red lights we all love. I pulled over immediately. After exiting his stealth patrol car, the conversation began:

[leo]Cop: What's your hurry? Did you just get off work?

Me: No, actually I was just taking my last ride before going to work.

 [leo]Cop: Where do you work?

Me: blah blah blah company in blah blah City.

[leo]Cop: I was doing 80, trying to read your plate, and you accelerated to 110 Shocked (remember the limit there is 60 mph). I thought you were going to run!

Me: No, no. I just didn't see you. I was focused on making that curve. [2 backup units arrive, cop2 and cop3 approach]

I was having a horrible daydream of going to jail, being fired for not showing up at work, and losing my bike. I was just waiting for the handcuffs to come out.  Undecided

 [leo]Cop to #2 and 3: It's all right. He's a nice guy. He just didn't see me.

Cop2 to me in stern voice: Get your hands out of your pockets. (I'd been standing casually, fingers slightly tucked in front pockets of riding pants)

Me: [complies with order]

Cop3: [inspecting the bike] It's a Ducati Monster.

 [leo]Cop: That's a nice bike. I'm gonna write this for going 70 in a 60.

Me: [breathing a sigh of relief as I sign and accept the citation] Thank you.
(Yes, I expressed gratitude for being handed a fine)

Then I donned my helmet, mounted my bike, and proceeded for the remaining 5 minutes of my ride home at EXACTLY the speed limit. It was my 1st time being caught in the state of Texas in years. The first time being ever caught on my bike, and the first time while doing nearly double the highway speed limit. So, did I get off easy, or what?

Well, I just read the "What's your worst ticket" thread. I no longer have any doubt that I was one of the luckiest SOB's that ever tempted fate. Damn, I was doing 50 over the limit. And he only wrote me up for +10.  It seems that cop could've ruined my life if he had been so inclined. I also read "The Pace" thread in the riding technique category. That's gonna make me a safer, better rider. And help me enjoy riding for a long time. This forum is a great resource.

Good story.  You're lucky.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Haha! If only I were not so foolish! Let's just say I'll keep my speed in check until I hit the back roads and the track. I just wish there were more twisties nearby. I feel compelled to burn through the nondescript straights at warp speed so I can get to the fun riding. And I had to see where my 821 could top out at least, I dunno, 5-10 times.

And that's what you do in that situation with that result.

Bargain! So jealous.

Those are great.  I got one of those a few months ago.  Walked when it should have been an 85 or so in a 60.

I was let go after doing 100 on a 65 with my (brand new) car, on my way to a car wash. Police stopped me, showed me the reading, and told me he would like to get two readings instead of one, before writing a ticket. And he only got one, and let me go.
Yes, IMHO the way you behave makes all the difference in the world, in many cases.
When I was in PDX, I was driving doing 90 on the HW 26 towards the coast, on the left lane, and a police car, with no lights or anything, moved into my right, and the policeman looked at me from his mirror, making me signs of slowing the fsck down  Grin
No ticket was handed even then.
I was not lucky two years ago, doing 67 on a 35 with my Nightster, on my way to work (late for a meeting, which myself wanted to happen early in hte first place). $500 fine, and lucky of not getting reckless driving.
