imagine if you will.... this guy's dad (his best friend) buys him a bike, and at the tender age of 17, he died as a result of riding that bike.

at the time of his death (17) he was still pretty much a decent human.

cut to age 21. the good human in him starts to die.

present day....he leaves in his wake, hundreds of damaged people.

had he died at 17...would it have been a waste?

what was/is his value.  what is/was the value of his victims?

I dont know..... nobody knows.

What I do know is.......he, at present day, is of no value to the world and should be removed. That weed needs to be pulled. If not... then we as a society, have just said, that we accept it in some small way, and that his life does have some value, and that makes us part of the problem too.

is the fireman doing his job because he truely wants to help people, or did he pick the job because chicks dig firemen?

if he's pulling your ass out of a burning car...who cares at that point.

Funny that you mention this.  My ex-neighbor that lived up front is a fireman.  The police had to put a gun to his head after they stormed into his house because his wife and 5 y/o kid called 911 as he was raping and beating the hell out of her.  He still works for the FD, don't ask me how and only got 4 years probation.  He had prior history of this kind.  If you think about it, this is the guy that could save your loved one.  It's make the beast with two backsed up.

Many firemen are not the boy scouts we think they are.

Thats not directed at your point, which is valid. Just a random observation.

it's that kind'a stuff that makes me wonder about this whole "value" thing.

does the world need  better husbands/fathers, or a rescue staff?
how many chances does a person get, to do life right?
is a man judged by the job he does, or by his actions behind closed doors?

Ah, but who is passing judgement?

You make what your life is worth.  If you wake up every day and say I enjoy my existence then it is priceless, if not well what ever.
No one can say how much your life is worth.  What are they going to say?  Here is 11ty billion dollars to die.  Well you can't cash in on that so in all reality your life is worthless.

If other people are concerned or think your life is valuable oh well.  If their concern doesn't translate over into the enjoyment of your life, then its worthless.

Your life's value is strictly dependent on your enjoyment of it.  Others opinions may enhance or cause detriment to it, but regardless; it is you who determines what to make of it.

Mine, wouldn't trade it for a thing.

... I'm totally cool with my friends saying "You remember when William bit it?!  That was awesome!  How do you explode in a fireball while being crushed under a waterfall?!  I don't think I'll beat that..."

devils advocate here....  Saloth Sar thought he was valuable. In the great big picture...was he?

If he enjoyed it, yeah, he was.  When the last day came and he said I am happy with what I've done then his was a good life.  Not good and evil, good.  Just good for him.  Life is abstract and subjective.  A guy who saves a million lives commits suicide.  What was he worth.  Nothing.

Crikeys... you guys are deep here... makes me want to go out and be a better person... or at least pull a baby from a burning building or something like that.

Not to go into the preachy... but things will keep going down hill as long as people view their own worth, and those they know, as more precious than that of others...

Oh, I can cut in line... my time is more important....
Look a wallet on the ground... free money....
Yeah! The waitress gave me a $10 in change when I paid with a $5...

We all are selfish and stupid sometimes, but a human life is as cheap as we make it, and there isn't anything left of it when we are gone.

To the individual, assuming that he/she/it is happy with the way they are, the value of their existence is immeasurable. To the universe as a whole, not a single one of us would be really noticed if we leave the game, worthless, less than a speck of dust clinging to the back of the toilet tank.
I feel that my value lies somewhere between those two extremes.
