So I put up a teaser pic of my Multistrada project in Randall's MTS thread and a couple people said I should start a new thread about it. I planned on waiting until I was finished...but they talked me into it...so here it is. ;D I'll update it as progress occurs.
I've had my 2004 Multistrada 1000DS for about 2 years, and have put about 12,000 miles on it…mainly from commuting year round. I live in Seattle, so this means I probably ride more in the rain then in the sun. :-\ I really love the bike, but as time went on I really wanted another naked bike (I used to have a 2001 Monster 900)…but I didn't want to pay for a new one! [roll] That, coupled with my wife getting a new car which means I don't have to commute on the MTS anymore, convinced me to turn the Multi into a naked bike. [evil]
I figure I'll get the comfortable MTS seating position, combined with the awesome look of a naked sportbike. What's not to love?! [thumbsup]
Here's a before picture. I'd done a few mods…namely exhaust, levers, CRG mirrors, pressure plate (not shown), new wind screen, and probably a few more I can't remember. IMO a very nice MTS...removing the mirrors and adding a dark screen really helps with the looks.
I first thought doing this a while back when I saw Nick's (motogpfan) modded Multi on the DML. I didn't really want the motard style, but I really liked the overall look. [bow_down] [bacon]

Then I saw this bike…and knew I had to transform mine. [bow_down] I don't like everything on this bike…but again I really like the overall theme/look.

So the first step was to tear everything down. Here's the bike sans fairings. It gives a hint of how it will look when finished. I really think the bike looks tough without all the fairings. [evil]
All of the electronics on the MTS hang off the left side of the frame. So the first thing to do is relocate all of that. I am putting all of the electrics in the air box, which means I have to switch over to pod filters. Nick (motogpfan) gave me some good direction on this, as it is how he did his. Nick really is a great guy...very helpful. [bow_down]
The battery will be located under the seat. Here's a shot of a cardboard mock-up I made. I'm currently getting a nice Aluminum one fabricated. Nick put his battery in the airbox, which I tried. The wiring harness is very stiff though, and I was having a tough time getting it to work. So...under the seat it will go. I will also put my Powercard in there which will make tuning it a bit easier than if it was in the airbox.
Initially I was going to just leave all the extra tabs on the frame…using a couple of them to mount the oil cooler above the horizontal cylinder. I even made the oil cooler mounting brackets. They were to be powdercoated so they'd look better than this pic:
BUT, the more I looked at it the more I thought the tabs had to go. A discussion with Dave R of Ducati Seattle a few weeks ago confirmed this when he admitted he wished he would have ground the brackets off of his SBK turned Monster he did a while back. After removing the triples for powdercoating I figured it was only like 4 more bolts to take off the whole frame. [roll]
So, I began the process of removing the frame so I could grind the brackets…and get it powdercoated a cool color. In the engineering profession we call the process of a job slowly becoming more involved “scope creep"! I am definitely experiencing scope creep! ;D
Minus the front end:
Removing the frame took a bit more effort than I originally thought. :o Turns out I had to remove the swingarm mount bolt, as well as the throttle bodies. A guy from our local club is rebuilding his MTS after a crash, and gave me some pointers…and moral support!! My dad had welded me up this engine stand back when I had my Monster…came in handy again! [thumbsup]
Here's where the bike sits today:
Frame…ready for powdercoat. All of the brackets have been ground off. I was going to have a couple tabs welded on for the oil cooler...but I looked at a Hypermotard yesterday at Ducati Seattle, and I'm now going to get a valve inspection plate from a Hyper or an M1000 and just mount the oil cooler to that. Nice and simple. ;D
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n258/JJGeo/Multistrada%20Re-Build/FrameReady1.jpg)
I think I passed the point of no return a while ago. There are a LOT of parts laying around my garage!! :P
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n258/JJGeo/Multistrada%20Re-Build/Piecesparts.jpg)
Finally...here's a teaser shot of my exhaust. It will be a 2-1 system. The can is baffled and for an R6...made by Competition Werkes in Oregon. The angle here is wrong…but the can slides over the header perfectly…I just have to get a short piece welded on to reposition it a bit. Thanks again to Dave R for showing me a bike in his warehouse with this exhaust. I was sold. [bow_down] [bacon]
I dropped the tank off for bodywork and paint yesterday, and I expect to drop off the frame, rims, triples, and a couple other small parts for powdercoat in the next couple weeks. Dave R also hooked me up with a guy from Boeing who makes custom moto parts on the side...he stopped by yesterday and will be making me custom brackets for the taillight and gauges. The battery box fabrication is also in progress. ;D
It really is nice having a dealer like Dave R (Ducati Seattle) around. He's very helpful, and has a lot of contacts in the local moto scene for fabrication...even though his shop isn't making much $$ from this project since I'm doing as much of it as I can by myself. [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
I'll post up progress reports as I move forward. [moto]

Man, kudos on the commitment. Like you said, well past the point of no return. Can't wait to see the result. And since you're an engineer, I know you'll do this with an obsessive eye to detail- should be amazing!
[thumbsup] [thumbsup]
Good project, as awkward as these bikes look stock, some of the coolest customs I've seen(including the two you posted) started with the Multi as a base, and from everything I've heard it's a great platform.
Sweet Frankenstrada [evil]
Thanks for taking the time to post this, it's providing some sorely needed inspiration. The exhaust on that Duccutter bike is impressive, can't imagine doing all those weld. I like the way the stock Multi exhaust header runs, the way you're doing yours. Know what you mean about scope creep - the simplest project always leads to a bunch more stuff.
this is going to be interesting....there is also the Loudbike guy that did his Hyperstrada that was very sweet if you need more inspiration and he has a VERY sweet ARC Fabrication full exhaust system sitting on his shelf at home from that bike which is available for sale if that is also an option at all?!?!?!?...
Whee!
Keep up the good work.
It's always fun to watch these builds.

Also you might think about converting the wheels so that you can upgrade the brake to 4 piston, full floaters. Wheels come up from time to time from those that have upgraded to CF - just a thought. Also you might see how a 696 fender will look on it. - Gene
Great start! [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
I wish I had the time, space and talent to pull off a build like this.

Those batteries are nice. I've seen them here, but didn't know Motowheels had picked them. Tempting...unfortunately I've alrady spent $150 on an Odyssey battery. :-\
The wheels/brakes would aso be nice...that's a future mod though. I have to limit costs some. ;D

Thanks for the links. Ya, I've seen his bike as well. Also very nice (although I'm not crazy about the color). Bummer it got crashed. His exhaust is cool, but I'm losing the under the tail routing.

This is all preliminary, but:
Wheels, triples, and passenger peg brackets = flat or satin black powdercoat
Frame = satin gun metal gray powdercoat (or something like that)
Tank = Black with a white strip down the middle. The border between the white & black will have a thin blue stripe...color will match my blue anodized pressure plate. The white/blue will likely have a tad of pearl in it...the black
might be satin finish. Haven't totally decided yet.
nice,
call me anytime if you start running low on motivation.

Great thread so far!

i always liked how the multi felt on the road but never could accept its ugly duckling status....
this is a multi project that could get me really interested in keeping my eye on the classifieds for a while...
im in love with it!! [thumbsup]
bump! How are things going with the project?
A lot of parts.... [popcorn]
So I went and had a look at the tank this morning, which is getting fiberglass work to cover the indents for the fairing attachments...which are no longer needed. I decided to fill the holes, rather than cut the tank to remove them like Nick (motogpfan) did. No matter what I had to fill in the rear fairing mount points anyway since they can't be cut out like the front ones can, so I figured why not just fill all of them in.
The fiberglass work is complete, except for some minor bondo type work to smooth things out. Looking good so far! [thumbsup] Paint on the tank should be done in a week or two. ;D I also dropped off the frame, triples, etc. for powdercoat two days ago , so it will be done in a week. Re-assembly should begin in 2-3 weeks.
Here's a few shots of the tank:

Yep. I removed the portion behind the cross member housing the pillion seat latch.
Nice paint on the tank. Looking forward to the rest.
Did you get the frame powder coated?
Quote from: dbran1949 on March 04, 2009, 09:30:27 AM
Did you get the frame powder coated?
Yes. I ground off all of the unnecessary fairing mount tabs first, then got it powdercoated gunmetal gray. Rims, triple clamps, and a few other pieces have been powdercoated flat black.
That should make a nice combination with the gloss black
Triple J, I just saw this thread and only had a chance to skim what you're doin'. I'm excited. This is gonna be so cool. I'll give it all a thorough read later.
Did you do a drawing or photochop or something before-hand so that you knew where you were going with it?

That's a good idea. I'll have to remember that for the next project! ;D I just started with an idea in my head...and that's still all I have. I can't draw to save my life anyway. :-\
I didn't even really plan the start of the project. I'd been talking about the possibility of a rebuild for a few months with my wife, then the weather went to shit, then a weekend came up where I didn't have anything to do and it was raining straight through. So...I just started taking things apart on Saturday.
As a result, the project has grown in scope a bit. Originally I wasn't even going to take off the frame, but the more I looked at it the more the unused tabs bothered me...so off it came. I then realized I needed some custom gauge and taillight brackets...and exhaust...and on and on. Luckily my wife thinks it's a cool project and doesn't complain when I buy more stuff...and I don't complain when she gets more shoes! [laugh]
Looking great and you are making fairly quick progress. Can't wait to see the finished project. If you are basing it mainly on that 3rd pic at the start of the post it will be very interesting to me. Like you I like a lot of things about that one but not everything.
looks awesome, i love it when people are beave enough and that into their bikes to do this kind of stuff. Subscribed! [popcorn] [drink]

I know you're into it already, but think about taking some time and doing a mock-up of what you have now and taking some pics now. Then find a friend with some photoshop skills (or PM Motocreations -- he does this stuff all the time). There'll be a buncha little things that'll be easy to change now that you won't wanna do when you have it all put together. Random powdercoat or paint stuff or one part that you wanna change out. Stu and I had a constant back n' forth when the M1000SS was being built. I think he wanted to kill me, but it was really productive (and expensive) to step back at a coupla different points in the process and see what things we'd missed when it was first envisioned.
This thing is gonna be f'n cool. [thumbsup]

I have done this to a certain extent. I made mock-ups of a couple different headlights before I bought one. I also have made mock-ups of the gauge and taillight brackets to make sure they looked good and fit (and I didn't have to pay for machining twice). Powdercoating is complete...so I hope it looks good! [roll] I thought about it quite a bit beforehand though...so it should. ;D
My downside on projects like these is I'm impatient. :-\

So I've had a fairly productive couple of weekends. The bike is 95% done I'd say. ;D ;D Still left to do are:
1. Battery Box: It's built, I just have to do some bondo work on it and paint it.
2. Talk light bracket: It's designed, we just had to wait until the bike was put back together so we made sure the angle was correct.
3. Exhaust: I just need to have a small angled connector piece made.
4. Clean it...the engine is filthy!! :P

Wow!!! That is looking amazing!! I have been following the progress and I did not expect it to look this good.
There is one thing that in my view could look better though. I think that lowering the headlight and clocks would make the lines flow a bit better front to back. I hope you don't mind but I took the freedom of "Photoshoping" your photos to illustrate what I am talking about. In any case, it has come out very very good and professional.

The headlight actually has been lowered since these pics were taken. The turn signals were hitting the tank so I had to lower it for clearance. I'm also probably going to use the higher sets of mount holes, which will in turn lower it a tad more. Not sure if I can get it as low as the photoshop due to the clamps and fork diameter...but maybe close. I agree it does look better lowered. [thumbsup]
Gauges are where they are. It's a custom machined bracket. Also, if I lowered them any more it'd look silly from the top due to the height if the ignition unit.
Thanks for all of the compliments guys! [thumbsup]

I wanted to, but the clamp that holds the pillion seat cover on is mounted on a cross member at the very end of what's left. Cutting it off would require the pillion cover to be permanently attached with fiberglass to the tank, not allowing for a pillion seat to be used, and permanently covering the gas tank beather valve. In the end I didn't want to do that.
Cleaning up the rear is tough on this bike as there was originally a set of rear fairings on it. I think it will look a little better with taillights/turn signals/plate on it though. There won't be so much empty space to focus on then.

I have a single can from Competition Werkes. Check the 1st page...there's a pic of the can. I just have to get a piece of exhaust pipe welded up so I can mount it at the angle I like.
OK...in response to DMF suggestions...lowered headlight. [cheeky] This is about as low as I can get it...maybe 1/2" more if I used the highest mounting holes on the headlight, but then it would stick out further. The forks get fatter right at the bottom of the clamps so they can't go down any more.
I think it definitely looks better...thanks for the suggestion. [thumbsup]
Not as good of a pic...it sucks outside right now. :-\
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n258/JJGeo/Multistrada%20Re-Build/Almost-LoweredHeadlight.jpg)
you're gonna kill me for saying this, but i really think the 696 headlight in all black would look great on this.
Wow man great job! That thing looks great! I like it with the lowered headlight as well. I think the stacked look goes well with the flow of the bike. [clap] [clap]

I have to agree here. Other than that clean up the rear portion of the frame and it's awsome! Very nice job! [thumbsup] [clap] [clap] [clap]
Oh, and paint the belt covers, and ...........
It will never be
done. Trust me on this. You'll always find something else that will look really cool and you will just have to do it. ;)
Amazing build! A friend of mine who owns a Duc Monster sent me a link to this thread, very cool indeed!
The only thing I would change is the headlight (as mentioned by some above)... here is a few I would consider:
https://www.europeanstreetfighter.com/index.php?page=product&ID=187 (https://www.europeanstreetfighter.com/index.php?page=product&ID=187)
(they have lots of other ones on that site, most them imported from Germany, where it all happens :)).
or this gixxer K4 headlight and custom made mini-fairing (it's a shop in France, but they'll ship to the US):
http://kmp.fr/index.php?page=catalogue&menu=1&statut=neuf&rubrique=6&num=2 (http://kmp.fr/index.php?page=catalogue&menu=1&statut=neuf&rubrique=6&num=2)
I actually had used both of these on previous Yamaha FZ6 projects:
the Phantom IV:

Other than that, you did a really great transformation... from a somewhat ugly (flames go ahead!) bike to an aggressive looking street fighter! [beer] very cool.
Thanks for the suggestions, but the headlight is staying...I like it. ;)
I did lower it though, and it looks much better. :)

This bike looks absolutely amazing. Very, very nicely done. Maybe paint the belt covers black but leave the DS1000 mark gray? I think that would look cool.
it'll look good no matter what. [thumbsup]
Thanks everyone. [thumbsup]
I do plan on painting the belt covers...it just has to quit raining. :P

Frame is there to stay. I chopped it right behind the crossmember which holds down the rear cowl/seat. If I remove anymore frame there won't be anything to hold that down. It'll look better once the taillight is installed. Right now it's too open and exposed from behind.
I like it anyway...looks beefy. ;D

Looks better with it lowered for sure [thumbsup] I believe it would look even better with a more OEM looking headlight, but that's just a matter of tastes...
How's the visibility at night? The projector looks like it's pointing upward?

Don't know. It's not hooked up yet, and hasn't been aimed properly. I want to get the bike started, and make sure everything works (stock headlight in particular) before I try to re-wire a new headlight in. Hopefully this weekend when the battery box is complete.
This may have been mentioned, but how about open belts instead of paint? I'm assuming you won't be riding in weather like it's been lately.
I feel your pain, I'm located not to far from you. Downpour the first half of the day, then sun the next, mixed with a little snow here and there... ??? ???

I considered it, but there's been at least one instance here of a belt catching a rock and being damaged...leading to engine damage. I believe it was Magnus' bike? It would look great, but too much risk for me. I may get the Rizoma window covers though.
I hear ya on the weather. I wanted to ride the 848 today...but it was about 30 this morning. No thanks...no heated grips on that bike. :'(

With that logic, there's been plenty of people here that ride and have wrecked, yet you still ride...
That ONE bike is the only one I've ever heard of that had open belt covers and had a rock work it's way in and damage. I think the risk is minimal...

Maybe...I'd rather not risk it though. I'm not saying people shouldn't run them open, just that I don't want to.
Keep in mind also...I'm in Seattle and this bike
will be ridden in the rain.

Thats a key point. Good for you on braving our shi**y weather and shi**y drivers.
Personally, I couldn't spend the time to build a nice bike, then ride it in the rain. But to each his own. [beer] [wine]
Its just a machine after all...
Another update:
The exhaust is complete. Besides the small Competition Werkes can, there is a baffle in the pipe just before the can so the system is about as loud as it was before with the Remus GP Race full system. Not bad at all. Turned out pretty much exactly like I was visualizing it. [thumbsup]
edit: kind of a weird angle to be looking at exhaust with the bike on the trailer. The header is much more prevalent in this view as compared to when the bike is on the ground. Oh well. :P

For those interested, here is a shot of the new battery box under the seat. It's been installed for a couple weeks, but I just hadn't taked a picture yet. The battery is an Odyssey so it can be mounted on its side.
The bike runs now and is complete except for the taillight assembly, the bracket for which is currently being fabbed. That will fill most of the open space in the back of the bike. Next shots should be of the completed project! ;D ;D
OMG.
Thats very nice.
big chunky multistradas don't float my boat but its amazing what loosing the fairings does.
SCHWEET!
Wow............it looks fantastic..........it really has everything I love about the naked monster, but totally unique
as for the open belt covers, I've run my monster that way for a few years through all kinds of weather and I did end up having to replace a couple of belt rollers as the started to seize up from the constant exposure to the elements........so I think belt covers are a wise choice
Me likey! [drink]

I thought about it, but with the can being stainless as well I don't know where I'd stop the coating (I was thinking flat black). Usually with a standard can it's a no brainer, as you just stop where the can attaches to the headers. I was afraid the line where the coating stopped would look weird, and I don't think having the can coated would look good. So, I left it and will just let it slowly turn gold from the heat which sould look cool.

have you thought about making a pillion handle that connect the two tubes coming up in the back. might complete the look there a bit and since you have passenger pegs, be functional?
Very nice work! [clap]
You now have a very unique bike! 8)
The rear end looks awesome!
But I am not so sure about the headlight. I still think that the Yamaha MT3 headlight will go smoother with the flow of the tank.
Or another idea would be allign the top light to the tank height, and stick the lower light in between the forks. But that's probably not possible, or too much work.
Just ideas to make your ride even more cooler [thumbsup]

Nah. I may add a ventura pack frame so I don't always have to wear a backpack, but that'll be it.

tripleJ,
maybe i missed it but you haven't really talked about what you did regarding tuning.
you mentioned "powercard"? did you install a power commander or something when you had the remus system?
are you using the original ECU?
how's that new exhaust compared to the remus in terms of performance?
could you tell us what the total cost was? no worries if you don't want to tell...
great job man, that bike is really unique and you must be very proud considering that you did all the work yourself [beer]

The bike had Termi slip-ons and the DP race ecu when I purchased it. I then replaced the Termis with a Remus full system, and added a Powercard. A Powercard is like a power commander light...it just adds fuels at different load settings. Desmotimes sells them. I'm still using that...I just dialed in a bit more gas with the pod filters and new exhaust. Seems to be running about the same as before, but I haven't had it dyno'ed. If I go to the Beast intake system over the winter I'll add a Power Commander and have it mapped proper.
Total cost was in the range of $4K I think. A large part of that was the tank glasswork and paint. The project could be done quite a bit cheaper if the person had the bodywork skills needed.
Looks great, mang. That's an excellent project. [thumbsup]

Beautifully executed Monstrada (copyright, registered, et al ;) ) I like what you've done. Would it be possible to lower the headlight a bit? It just seems like the top should be lined up with the tank. Maybe if you add the windshield like you mentioned then it would be alright where it's at. Have you figured out what windshield you want to use? This was the only one I could find for that headlight, but damn that's not cheap, even if you get it without the headlight:
