So, lately i've been getting the itch to buy myself a semi-nice watch (i think most Tag Heuer are out of my price range).
i'm thinking a couple hundred bucks should get me what i want
i keep finding Seikos in this price range that i like. I also found some on Fleabay for cheeeeeeaaaapp - but how can one tell if they are real?
what should i look for?
any other brands?
...lets see yours
No pics, but my father has worn Seiko watches for years without issue. He also has a Wittenauer (sp?) that was a 20-years of service gift from the company he worked for. Rarely wears it, but it is really nice ~
JM
I wear this every day.... It's great. I'm pretty clumsy with it and the band is getting pretty marked up from hitting shit but that's probably easily fixed. The kinetic movement is awesome.

It's just the second hand, always running. The two red hands are for the chronograph function.
TiAvenger, I can't quite make out the name, what's that one called? It's a fantastic looking watch.
Check out Rado ceramic. Mines 10 years old looks brand new, Sharon has a 17 years old one that still looks great.

i like the citizen eco drives...
I have had several mid-priced watches over the last 20 years. The best one so far has been the Citizen Eco-Drive Solar-Tech Alarm/Chronograph with an all titanium case and band. I'm wearing it now and have for a couple of years. It is not without it's quirks. Mainly that damn thing better see the sun on a regular basis or it doesn't keep time. However the gold tone plating hasn't worn off at an highly accelerated pace like the Seikos and Pulsars I've had in the past. The Ti watches are stupid light. You hardly know your wearing it.

The Perpetual Kinetic model. The other model lines have a similar designed one as well.

is there an easy way to spot a fake?
i found some uber cheap Seikos on Fleabay, but i am very skeptical of them

Hard to tell with a photo 'cause the photo could be of the real deal stolen from the interwebs. In person, fit and finish typically jump right out at you. Faces that move, dates that don't fit well in the date window, sharp/rough edges, etc.

McFry... give this site a look: http://www.onthedash.com/ (http://www.onthedash.com/) Go down the sidebar and click on "gallery of fakes"
It's more pertinent to vintage Heuers but it should give you an idea of things to look for in a fake.

Fake.
Look at his pumped feedback.
On ebay here is what can happen. You can get a real one for cheap, but they will be "new" 7-8 years old. They just sat in boxes somewhere. This can cause problems in kinetics as the capacitor on earlier generations go bad after 6-7 years.

oh wow - didn't see the feedback
I got my Seiko titanium off fleabay around 3 years ago, hasn't missed a beat & it's a real one. Really light, sometimes I forget that it's on my arm. :P
Usually you can tell a fake by trying to see what is stamped on the back of the watch. Serial number etc.
Tag H is way overrated when they first came out they cost in the 100 to 300 range, they didnt sell they started adding an extra zero at the end of the price 1000, 3000 and they went like hot cakes
I currently have 3 Gshocks, Swiss Army pocket watch and my Omega speedmaster chrono automatic <- my fave
Gshock has some neat dress up style stuff.

Heuers have been high end timepieces since the first one in 1860.
Prolly the last time they cost $100...
Bought this after losing the Tag diving two dozen years back. $100.00 and 20 years later and it's still ticking. Great watch IMO

I have two Tags, and they're great watches. I actually bought one of them off of Ebay, to replace one that I "lost". Of course, I found the lost one right after the new one came in. It's actually fairly easy to get a real Tag on Ebay, if you know what the real ones look like. Also, stay away from sellers from the far east, especially Singapore.
Skagen - makes a nice watch, but the crystals tend to scratch. More for dress IMO.
Tag - you can beat on all day. I have one that's been through hell for 15+ years, still ticking.
Tissot - I have a T-touch that's about 5 years old. Really cool watch, lots of functions, may be out of your price range.
Citizen - I have an older Divemaster, good quality watch, but heavy.
I tend to stay away from the automatic winding watches. I've had problems with them winding down from sitting, and have also had problems with keeping accurate time. I'd rather replace a battery every 2-3 years.
Good luck.
I like Tags, but they're just too big. I have 2 Movados that I like very much.
A Gentry chronograph

If anyone is looking for a a seiko....GO TO ZALES RIGHT NOW!!!!! [thumbsup]
Zales is no longer going to carry the seiko line so they are discounting what they have in stock (many, many watches). I bought a $700 kinetic for $200 a couple months ago. I was at the Zales here locally the other day and they still had lots of different models, all at a 60% or more discount.
I love the one I bought, Thought it has a glass section on the back of the watch so you can see the kinetic winder, so I hope it holds up well. I also have a 30 year old seiko that belonged to my grandfather. I love them...I thought about buying a "higher end" watch, but with a 60% discount...I went ahead and got the seiko.
Love my Oris TT1 Diver

The Oris is a timepiece for those "in the know"
Among the finest of the swiss timepieces and the most avant-garde styles available (for swiss).
I think all of them use Sapphire bezels now.
new >$1500 which is a steal (for the quality) but you can find older models on ebay for around 200-300
They are awesome.
i had an old Oris I got off ebay, it didn't wind (was self-winding) and i sent it off to get an estimate for repair.. they fixed it and sent it back, no cost.. nice...

I have this same Wenger on my wrist. I know it's not a high end watch, but I've had it for 6 years and it's still running great. A new battery every 2-3 years. It works for those of us with skinny wrists who can't carry a Flavor-Flav size watch, and cheap enough that I won't cry if I lose it.
Ahhhhh.... I just told myself I wasn't going to buy another watch and I just did. www.woot.com (//http://) had a killer deal on "National Geographic" endorsed Egana watches. I needed another daily beater so I picked up a black and gold diver that's good for 1000m. Now I've got a Citizen Calibre 2100, Seiko Arctura Kinetic, ESQ carbon fibre polystrap chrono, swiss built Tag Carerra replica, an automatic 21 jewel Invicta (manual wind), a chronograph Invicta, 3 Kenneth Coles and the Egana. WTF am I doing... I have two arms, but can only wear one at a time. I need to start liquidating my timepieces. Unfortunatley I still want to pick up an Oris diver, a Tissot T-Touch, and an Omega Speedmaster.
PS - www.worldofwatches.com (//http://) has some killer deals on it all the time. After buying my frist three from jewelers i noticed the mark up and went electronic for my watch purchasing sickness.
You feel safe that you are not getting knock off watches from them? I had one experience buying a used Rolex online that turned out to be a really good fake, but a fake nonetheless. $50 well spent to the jeweler who had to inspect it all the way to the serial numbers on the movement to find out it was fake.

I won't buy any upper midgrade watches from the interwebs, but for $100-150, why not? It'll still be a decent time piece. I do have a pretty good relationship with a jeweler, but even then they can "only knock so much off'. For the Omega I want to get a used vintage watch that has some character. T-Touch can be had readily for $500, and the Oris I'll probably pick up preowned from an authenticated dealer (most likely out of state on the web)

He's for real, his name is Mr. Yu, and anyone who says otherwise simply hasn't done their homework. His feedback isn't "pumped", he's really sold that many watches over the years. I'm a Seiko fan, and I'm sure I've bought some of my watches from him. His prices are that low because he does that much volume, and he can sell for those prices and still make a liveable profit.
Look up Poor Man's Watch Forum, Watchuseek, TimeZone.com, etc. Get a feel for the seller before you buy. There's a saying in the watch world, "Buy the seller, not the watch".
As far as mechanical watches being less accurate than quartz, that's completely correct...no mechanical watch, not even the finest wrist chronometers such as Rolex and Breitling, can hold a candle to even the cheapest quartz timepieces, as far as accuracy goes. That being said, I own nothing but mechanical watches...all automatics (an automatic is simply a self-winding mechanical watch). There's something about the symbiotic relationship with an automatic -- it "lives" off of my moment-to-moment activities, and in return it tells me the time -- no winding is ever needed, and no batteries to replace. I don't live my life to the second, so I'm not too worried about having to reset a mechanical watch periodically...I've got mine regulated so they generally run a few seconds per day fast, and once or twice a month I'll set 'em to the correct time again. If they're off any more than that, they are easily "regulated" by any competent watchmaker...it's a five minute process to regulate a mechanical watch, and generally only needs to be done once, after the watch has had a few months to "settle in" after initial purchase.
As far as a mechanical watch "running down" if you don't wear it, I generally rotate between two given watches on a day-to-day wear basis, and I'm active enough that the one not being worn will sail right through its "off day" with plenty of reserve to spare.
I thoroughly enjoy my mechanical Seikos, and so does my son -- we both wear Seiko Sport 5 automatics, which are made in literally hundreds of different models. The army and aviator style watches on Pokemonyu's eBay page all have the 7S26 movement in them, which is a bombproof self-winding movement made by the millions by Seiko. You can't hardly go wrong picking up on one of those for a beater watch.
[EDIT] I just remembered another reason Pokemonyu can sell for so low a price -- he doesn't include a nice Seiko box and watch pillow in his prices. Those items cost a dealer additional money when they buy wholesale, and Mr. Yu just doesn't buy that sort of fluff. He does package his watches extremely well for shipment to his customers, just don't expect to get the fancy Seiko box and pillow.

ALL TRUE...however a COSC certified swiss auto and a good winder gives a quartz a close competition...you do pay 10 to 50 times what you would for a Japanese auto (Citizen Miyota Movements) in buying a COSC certified swiss auto....

While we are talking watches...
Breitling? Overpriced or worth the $$.
I'm looking at the Titanium (LOL of course) Aerospace version. ~$2700 in stores, around $2100 online. Although I'm leary of buying it online, I'd hate to end up with a fake. $600 is quite a bit of $$ to save though.
And before anyone goes off for spending that kind of $$ on a watch, it's going to be a gift to myself for become a FPL (full performance level) controller here at Atlanta Center. Only takes (on average) 3 years of training :D [thumbsup]
Is a Breitling worth the $$? Yes and no.
There's the argument that a good watch will give a lifetime of use and enjoyment, and Breitling certainly makes a marvelous watch, and has the cachet of a Tag, Omega, or Rolex.
Then there's the argument that how could you spend so much on a watch when you could've just bought a Timex from K-mart and used the savings for__________.
Fill in the blank.
As an aside, I find it interesting that certain watches become favored by different groups of people, ie Breitling being preferred by pilots, Omega by sailors, etc..

Most Beitlings are fine time pieces (I own an Automatic Chronometer w, MOP face ). Breiling makes some timepieces for upwards of $100,000.
If YOU think they are worth the $$$ , then they are.
When I look at my Invicta Subaqua Noma 111 w, the Valjoux 7751 kalibre movement , to me it is every bit as well made as my Breitling or Rolex Sub Mariner. Dolph :)

Dolph :)
+1. The invicta is another watch I've been eyeing as well. I don't know much about them, but the display case appeals to my mechanical side for sure. Looks like a lot of watch for the $$$ as well.

LOL. I've gone through quite a few sacrifices over the past 5 years to get where I am, and it isn't an easy business to say the least. I don't expect those not in the business to understand, but I'm sure everyone here has knuckled down before [thumbsup] [drink] [beer]

ALL Breitlings are COSC certified chronometers, as are (most?) Omega SMPs, and most Rolexes. All are worth the money, if nice Swiss mechanical watches is your bag.
The Breitlings and Omegas generally use Swiss ETA 2824-2 chronometer-grade mechanical movements. Rolex uses their own movement.
What do all you watch geeks think about Tissot?
I don't know anything about them, other than there are a couple cool looking ones in the "Nicky Hayden collection". ;D
Also...how about Breil?

[thumbsup] on the T-Touch. I've had mine for 5 yrs or so. Pay the extra for the titanium, it's too heavy otherwise.
You'll never pass this class if you don't read the material!
Personally, I try not to wear anything people would be willing to stab me for.
That and having a really nice watch is yet another thing to worry about misplacing.
I have an ancient gold and platinum pocket watch that was appraised for a rediculous amount of money.
I doubt I'll ever wear it.

I miss my watch, I'm tired of pulling out my phone to check the time. I looked twice today at my bare wrist. :( I had been wearing a Seiko, but I went to set it back an hour last November and I couldn't push the pin back in. Thinking I had jammed it I tried to pull it back out, and the whole pin pulled out. :-[
I had a Skagen that was just about perfect. It was super thin, super light and had a small face. I practically couldn't tell it was on. Too bad the ticking would drive me crazy at night, even from across the room, it had to go.

+!. Reputable site. I bought my first Tag Link from them. Also, check www.Prestigetime.com (//http://) and www.Overstock.com (//http://).
I've always been amazed how a many of the swiss watch makers use the same movements. For example most Tag and Omega movements are either made by or based off of ETA movements. It's hard to claim that one is less reliable than the other.
Swatch bought ETA a long while back, so all of our Swiss movements (with the exception of the Rollies, JLC, and other super high-enders) are made by a company that became famous for super cheap ugly 80's plastic watches with multi-colored nylon wristbands. Oris does use an ETA base, but mods and completes it to its own specs. Kind of like us Monster lovers... [moto]

i prefer leather straps, i just hate how they absorb yuor sweat and begin to stink after a year or so
I got a Breil with a rubber strap and like that better for daily wear than the metal one.

You touch the face for Chrono, Altimeter, Temp, Barometric Pressure, Alarm, and a very fun and cool Compass feature.
Ive worn this one for I want to say 8-9 years, its a bit bulky but its a solar powered eco drive and its held up nice and believe me it gets abused. I have had the crystal replaced due to welding spatter melting into the glass. But other than that I never had a problem. I like to go diving and it has a deepest depth recorder in it which is nice as a backup when doing multi level dives and something happens to your console.

My mother gave me a Seiko for high school graduation, I still have it, and I've been using them for the past 30 years. Not too expensive, for me they've always been very reliable, and if you check Ebay, there are about a half million different styles. I'm not sure if there is a bogus Seiko problem or not, they aren't very expensive like a Rolex. Some guy in Singapore seems to sells tons of them though.

Or is it just a crappy version with the name stuck on it?
I've always been happy with Seiko. Dad was a Millright and his Seiko's lasted until he slammed a slipped wrench into them.
