I don't remember why the old westy's were flammable, but they went up often enough that it's a known problem.

$18,000???? :o Is there something special about this model?  My only experience with VW campervans is seeing them at the campsites and for sale in Europe, but they didn't cost anywhere near that amount.

They go for a lot more than that if there completely rebuilt, up to $25-26. That one needs some TLC, I'd go no higher than $13-14

Check again-the high end westfalias are anywhere from 80-100.

Do they get that? No clue.

Cheaper than housing in cali.

I've never wanted one-just if the prices those were going for were at all worth it I would've (attempted) to fix it up and flip it.

Used to love those.  Put myself thru college restoring air cooled VWs.

I had a '71 Campmobile (AKA Westfalia), the last year of the Type 1 engine... The Westfalia name didn't come about until the Type 4 models, mine had CAMPMOBILE emblazoned on the hand-pump sink. 

I got it my second year of college, immediately dropped the old engine and transaxle, and built a brand new 1800cc motor with all Gene Berg components and a beefed up gearbox.  Kadron carbs, fully balanced crank, balanced and lightened pistons and rods.  IT ran so smooth.

I drove it all the way to Belize one summer, the next summer all the way up to Alaska.

I have a ton of crap from him.  His wife used to toss in tons of Zotz with the orders.  His sons took over, I think.  I haven't hand my hands in a old VW in ages. 

That bus I rebuilt had a completely reworked crank.. stroked to 74mm.  Gene did the heads himself.  He was a huge proponent of moderate compression engines, so all of his street engines had 6.8-7.2:1 compression IIRC.  He also sold that Oberg filter setup for the VW with the element sensor which I put on all my cars. 

The only one I never got to work on was  a Notchback.  I restored several "station wagons" (buses) and all the bugs, ghias and squarebacks, but never a notchback.

My old coach fitted his out with an "Elefant" motor kit.  I forget the actual capacity, it was more than 2 litres, maybe three or more with Porsche hot up parts. Cant remember the details. You guys would know about those ay?

that's a nice fastback..  loved those too.. basically, the type 3 was the best VW motor.  put the coolign fan right on the crankshaft -- where it belongs.

The local VW place has a very stock one of those pictured above.  It's really a sight to see.  I would love to take it for a spin.  That and the original turbo Ghia they have sitting there too.

That 'squareback' with the bug nose looked like the aft part was from one of the buses, those scoops look familiar.

New replacement parts were horrendous expensive, so 2-3 parts cars were employed to keep 1 running.

But I'm sure they're priced well above what I'd be willing to pay.

All I've ever seen is a few small holes when you pop the badge off. Split windows definitely weren't recessed. afaik

In the 70s there was a shit ton of companies that made toppers for the VW bus.  Some of them were pretty ingenious.

There's tons of 'hot rod' engines that can be run. A good 1600cc dual port will move along pretty well. Next step would be 1776 or 1800, but if you want to do wheelies you can go to 1914cc and up. These guys build all kinds of turn key motors.

My bus motor was a ground-up brand new Gene Berg case and crank.   Stroked crank.  Put out just over 1900cc.  The crank was fully balanced and blueprinted.

I used the dual Kadron carbs that Berg sold. I wanted to try his EFI setup that he developed, but never did it.

Berg modified the case to use a full flow oil filter, with a bypass at the pump.  It was incredible.  I used an Oberg mesh filter with the sensor.  All stuff that Gene Berg used in his drag cars.

Heads were flycut to keep compression lowish, i think it was around 8:1 with that stroker crank.  But it ran very smoothly.  Gene set me up with a matching cam profile that kept it streetable.  It was such a work of art.
