I like the 696 but it could be so much better with just a little more attention to detail.  Most Ducati enthusiasts are not adverse to change.  I don't think things like the aluminum subframe or the air intakes are what turn most people off.  It is the lack of elegance and organic flow that seems to be lacking in this model that even the 999 has.  The air intakes in the tank are something that I have wanted for some time.  They are functional and eliminate the tank ding at the same time.  But, they could have been a bit smoother and more round as could the edges on the plastic tank covers.  I like a rear subframe but it should have been more slab sided like the DD16 or tubular like the 999.  This one is neither.  The rearsets should have been much slimmer.  Maybe they are expecting some fat passengers.  The biggest styling atrocity and the easiest to fix are those ridiculous cartoon like exhaust cans.  How that got past the final review I'll never know.  It's like that guy at the office with the really bad toupee that looks like a dead squirrel.  You have to wonder if he has any mirrors in his house and does he look in them before he leaves and says "oh, yeah that looks good".  At least other manufacturers are coming out with mufflers that don't look like something Wile E. Coyote ordered from the ACME company.
