New (old) gun in the house, that may yet get some use on my 2011 hunting license:

It's a Stevens 311D 12ga. side-by-side; a good field gun & I'm looking forward to getting a chance to put some shells through it.

Which occasions a question - without a choke gauge, I need help deciphering the stamps on the barrels. I'd assume it's an full/modified pair, but I would imagine these mean something:

The left barrel is stamped 20V

The right barrel is stamped (I think) 28V

Any ideas?

This is kind of stone axe technology here (what would you expect from me?) but you could try and just pattern the gun at XX distance using the shells you might hunt with. Don't know whether you plan on hunting with dove/quail loads or duck/geese rounds.

My friend had a dead mobile home on his ranch (he set it on fire and the pics were awesome! [thumbsup], we dug a hole with his front end loader and buried the carcass) and I actually used the sides of it to shoot my shotguns and see how they patterned. It was very useful. I already knew what the choke tubes were but seeing how they patterned at varying distances was good intel.

You could use some plywood or maybe large sheets of cardboard. May not tell you exactly how the barrels are choked but it will certainly tell you which side is tighter and how the barrels pattern.
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

that's exactly how to do it.

set up two targets at 25' and 100'.  the difference in spread is calculable using that.

Thanks; in the meantime, I'll just keep pulling the trigger for the fatter choke at close birds, and the tighter one at birds further out.

That, and I'll keep missing 'em the vast majority of the time.   ;D

I have a thing for Class III scatterguns... which I am sure everyone is sick of hearing! [laugh] I think my 14" barrel guns with bantam length stocks and ghost ring sights are more "useful" in a real world way but those pistol grip shorties are pretty damn cool. [thumbsup] The .410 version is neat. [popcorn]

i told my wife after my son was born that my Wilson with the 12" barrel and short stock was child sized LOl

i like that 410 as well.  if they made 2" shells in 410 it would be prfect

no regular shells.  there are short shells available from Aquila and Centurion but the shotguns feed ramp has to be modified to use them.  they increase capacity though!
