Took the boys to the range today.  My 10 year old son shot my 870 for the first time.  Love the reduced recoil rounds!

After, we went to the .22 plinking range.  Six year old consistently dinged 8" steel at 20 yards with the bolt action Woodchucker.  10 year old was loving the .22 converted Glock 17.

Was a good gun day!

Load data update (yesterday): like an idiot, I was flipping through my speer manual and realized it had load data for 231.... which is the same powder as HP-38.  So I loaded 15 and went to the range and tested, and they shot well.

I am glad I followed up because the original loading I did was 4.3 grains, and the min listed load was 5.0, they would have likely been squibs.

Today was black powder. It's a fun group of older guys, and me the whippersnapper. [laugh] I haven't been out since Feb, but I shot ok, 174 of 300 possible.  Offhand shooting at 25, 50, and 100 yards, shooting sticks at 50.

Its too bad its getting harder and harder to buy black powder  :-\

Awesome! Which range did you go to?

And your gun can never been too clean but it's not good when it's too oily. Heavy on the clean, light on the lube. ;)

I have to disagree with the cleaning comments.  It is possible to have a barrel too clean, at least when it comes to accuracy. My AI opens up to 1 MOA with a completely scrubbed barrel.  I have to shoot 3 to 5 rounds just to get back to .5 MOA, and about a dozen to get it back to shooting normally.

Here is a statement from Shilen on the subject:

QuoteHow clean is clean?
We get this question many times and have a great deal of difficulty helping some customers understand that a rifle barrel does not have to be spotless to shoot great. Many times more harm than good is done in trying to get it that way. Picture a car's fender. If the fender has a small dent in it, then professional application of body putty fills the dent. When painted over, the dent becomes unnoticeable, and the surface of the fender is smooth and consistent. The same thing happens in a rifle barrel on a microscopic level. Removing this small trace of copper puts you right back to square one. The next bullet that crosses that area will, again, leave a small trace of copper. Similar to patching a pothole. All successful benchrest shooters shoot one or more "fouler" shots down the barrel before going to the record target. This is not to warm up the barrel. They are resurfacing it on the inside. Benchrest shooters clean between relays to get the powder fowling out, not the copper. However, since copper usually comes out with the powder, they know that it must be replaced to get "back in the groove". I've had shooters tell me they "cleaned their rifle for 3 hours to get all the copper out of it." Their next statement is almost invariably that they had to shoot 4-5 rounds through it just to get it back to "shooting" again. This tells me that in order for the rifle to shoot well again, they had to replace the copper they worked so diligently to remove. I have a 7x08 Improved that shoots the same 1/2" MOA after 15 minutes of cleaning or 3 hours of scrubbing and de-coppering. Personally, I prefer shooting to cleaning. The gist of this is to set a regular cleaning regimen and stay with it. If the accuracy of the rifle is acceptable with a 15 min. cleaning, why clean longer? I would much rather have people admiring the groups I shot than marveling at how clean my barrel looks on the inside.

Marine Sniper friend of mine taught me to clean my rifle the way he was taught:
cleaner in barrel or on bore snake. 3 passes.
6 passes with rod and oil/ cleaner patches
6 passes with rod and dry patches.
He said they leave the copper residue in the barrel for 200 shots then clean it out and shoot a few fouler shots before putting the the rifle back in service.

I'm not so much as gun guy as someone who is fascinated by the potential of 3D printing.  Anyway, came across this and thought it germane to this thread.  As the technology develops further and amateur enthusiasts get involved, it could lead to some cool stuff.

If they have skeet available try that if you haven't already.  More fun then trap IMO.  Birds aren't just flying away from you. They are coming from left and right

If you can do a sporting clays course the birds come from all sides and angles (front, back, left, right, high, low, in the air and left, right rolling or bouncing on the ground).

Great call DR I should have thought about that.  Sporting clays is definitely the best with all the variety of shots they present.
