where is everyone buying their 556 ammo these days?

Not looking so good for a while.

Probably your best bet is load your own.

That's what I have been doing.

Cheaper Than Dirt dot Com, but it's anything BUT cheaper than dirt.

Also, at the shooting range, when they have it.

I'm always 5 min late at academy. They sell 15000 rounds in minutes.  Cheaper than dirt is out as well.  We'd load our own in Venezuela growing up and I hated it.  The only ammo missing in my stockpile is 556.   bang head. I have all the others.

So if I wanted to get started loading my own ammo, what do I need to know? If you're kind enough to answer, please assume I'm an idiot.

Now really isn't the time as there aren't any primers available either.

That said...how many rounds per month do you want to shoot, and how many calibers?

pro's and cons?....

then again, I may just decide to trade it in on another 1911...I have 2 already and I love em.

Right now I'm looking primarily at 5.56 and .45. I don't shoot too much 5.56, but I go through 200-300 rounds of .45 per month.

That's about the top of the limit for a single stage press.

An inexpensive way to get into it would be to go with a Lee Classic turret which should be capable of your needs and then some.

This place is the only outfit that offers that press in a kit... http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/23840

Of course they're out of stock...people are going way past panic, and the system is overloaded. You can build your own kit by buying what's included. You'd also need a pair of 6" calipers, dies for the calibers you want to reload, a kinetic hammer to pull bullets when you make the inevitable mistake, as well as some books. The ABC's of reloading is a good resource for the basics, and the Lyman #49 manual has loads for almost every bullet and powder.

You might want to try and find components before you buy a press. They are scarce. I'd recommend starting with plated or jacketed projectiles. Lead is trickier and isn't the best choice for a beginner without someone to show you the ropes, IMO.

Why is lead trickier?

Why is lead trickier?

probably due to it being softer and more subject to rookie mistakes of too much pressure or something...but I am purely assuming/speculating...

For an HK?  Price.  /thread

Seriously though, HK makes some mighty fine weapons, but they're simply not with the cover charge if you ask me.  There are so many other choices out there that will shoot just as nicely, group just as tightly (after all, it's more the shooter than the gun), all while costing your several hundreds less.  Plus, just try finding any spare parts for an HK that don't force you to take out a small loan.

Nothing helps a gun or the shooter like a smooth, slick trigger. It can turn a POS/I hate it/want to get rid of it gun into a favorite. waytogo bacon I have several that have made that magical transformation and I will never part with them.

now add in the new spring kit

and

just as you said

magical transformation

I hated this little gun, now it is smoother than the Walther... <wonders if I can polish and kit the bond gun?>
