Two questions I'm working on.  Purchases will be a few months down the road.

I'm looking for a small varmit rifle.  We've got some serious nuisance squirrels around.  Thought about a .22, but wanted to check out the .17 offerings too before I decided.  I'm completely new to .17s, so I'm not even sure what to ask.  Basically, I'm looking for excellent accuracy in the 40-50 yard range or so.

For 1911s, I just want to, just because.  I currently have two Rugers (P94 and GP100) and have zero complaints on either.  The Ruger 1911 looks nice.  They seem to be available around the $700 range locally.  Reviews look good, and I've had good luck with Ruger pistols are what is leaning to stay with Ruger.  However, are there other makers that I really should at least consider around that price point?  If you suggest another maker, take a minute to explain why if you can.

Thanks!

i consider that "rock throwing" range.  you can use pretty much any caliber.  .17 is fine for that, as is good quality .22

At 50 yds, .17 has far less rise/drop than .22, but that's more an issue of your scoping and knowing how to account for distance.

In other words, the accuracy issue isn't the caliber, but the whole kit.

Sounds like it's more of a ammo price & initial price of the rifle itself that will decide which way I go.  Of course either way, some range time to get used to the behavior or a particular rifle and ammo.

I'd go with .22 myself.

Out to 50 yds there isn't enough rise/fall with .22 to really make a difference, and 22 ammo is slightly cheaper. Add to the fact you can use subs or quiets out to 25 yds without any hold over/under and your neighbors won't even know you fired.

The only plus side to .17 is if you want to start shooting at them 100 yards out.

I have the full size Ruger 1911.  I bought it because of the price and because it's stainless.

I cannot praise it enough.  It is one of my best shooting handguns!  And it's not just me that says that.  Anyone  that has used it is very surprised.

I know Ruger has had some questionable quality in the past but I can comfortably say that those days are past them.  I'm seriously considering a GP100 over a S&W 686.

Anyone else here use Froglube?

I started using it sometime last year.  I only applied it to a few guns.  I've been very happy with how it works.  I love that it's food grade and it smells good.  I can clean or apply it in the house without anyone getting bent out of shape.  The guns are so easy to clean once it's applied.  The 1911 just needs a quick wipe down after being used.

The bad part is that applying the product correctly is a pain but you only have to do it once or twice.

How does it stand up to the salt spray test?

I only use Eezox for everything.  Smells reaaal good but will make you throw up like a mofo if you eat it.  Spray it on and the gun is lubed and will never rust.  ever.

I like how easy it is to clean the gun once it's applied.
