I posted an article awhile back. From a former Depot level armorer that was working for the Feds. Heavy gun use on the range equipment. They started noticing repeat parts failures, and after studying it, they attributed it to over cleaning with harsh chemicals. Average folks don't abuse guns like that, but it's food for thought. ymmv

During Basic, I had arguably one of the worst M16/AR15/M4 guns ever to see the surface of God's green earth.
I could literally only get 3 to 5 rounds out of it before a jam. I became so proficient at S.P.O.R.T.S. that I could have wrote an entire novel series about it.

After one of the last range days before qualifying, I asked my DI if I could speak with the armorer about this particular weapon.
He agreed and I headed off to the armory. When I got there, the armorer had one of the training SAWs broken down and was cleaning it. That thing was so clean that some of the bluing was actually coming off of parts.
I knew right then and there what the problem was...the gun had been cleaned too well and the tolerances had opened up to the point that the gas charge was partially blowing buy the bolt carrier causing periodic "shortages" in the cycle.
I spoke to the armor about it, and he was insisting that it was a good idea to over clean than under clean *(I definitely did not agree with this). I asked if I could get a new bolt carrier for my weapon and he grudgingly agreed.
Never had another issue with short bolt cycles and would only clean my weapon enough to pass inspection but otherwise kept it as dirty as I could.
