I stopped in at the local "good" gun shop in town.  I wrapped my hands around a Ruger 9mm.  Thoughts?

Going back Wednesday to get rid of my Jennings Jams-a-Lot as a trade in.  When I go back are some other similar 9mm to check out?  I'm pretty happy with 9mm from a cost stand point.

I'm thinking of picking up a Kimber Custom II + .22LR conversion kit for myself for a first pistol. Primarily for target range & home defense.

Seems the lower end Kimber at ~ 650-700 isn't all that more than a plastic glock/hk/etc for a better spec/reputation/etc. Picking up the conversion so I can get used to handling it and shooting cheaply before "upgrading" it back to original .45.

Thoughts?

Do it!! Kimbers are very nice. I have a load of 1911s and several are Kimbers. Never a problem. Ever. I have a "massaged" Springfield Armory .45acp 1911 that I put a Wilson Combat .22lr conversion on. I love it! My 14 year old son loves it! It's been on the pistol for years. I don't even know where the .45 slide/barrel is! What does that tell you? Never a problem with it either. Cheap fun 1911 practice. All good. [thumbsup]
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Do it!!

And, you'll quickly find out that a $700 Kimber is a couple hundred less than an HK.
And the sugar fountain fairy swore so hard when she came to super-size that stale hope soybean; liiiike a homeless German woman. Who is this super-sizing spirit-crushing femme? And tell her I'll break a tree root up in her shrimp.

Thanks Fastwin & Drkwng!

I've mostly shot HK USP, but last winter I shot my brother-in-law's Kimber and liked it quite a bit. He's got one of the fancy custom shop Grand Raptor IIs. Aesthetically, I dig the Eclipse series but it feels like the responsible decision would be to get the most entry level one and spend some time putting some .22 and .45 through before splurging for $1k+ gun that is mostly aesthetic bling additions.

Is it worth springing for the "Target" variant to get the adjustable sights? or if sticking with fixed, for the TLE to get night sights?

I own a Ruger SR9c, what do you want to know?

Maybe he's talking LC-9

It's the P-series 9mm.  I'm looking for a nice, not too expensive 9mm that is reliable.  Is it reliable?

1.  9mm is cheap to shoot and most likely has plenty of self defense power.  If I am wrong, point toward a more appropriate caliber, but give reasons.

2.  I have a top budget of about $500.  Feel free to recommend others in that price range.  As much as I would like a Sig or H&K, they're out of range for my budget.

I like the feel of the P-Series 9mm.  I can't remember the exact model number.  I'm open to other brands too.

Are you stuck on alloy/composite frame?

Is the price for a new pistol?

I'd lean toward fixed night sights. I have adjustable sights (old series 70 Colt Gold Cups) on very few of my 1911s. The gunsmith customs have Novaks, Meprolight or Trijicon night sights. As well as more modern off the shelf Kimbers, etc. My 2 cents. ;)

I'd also take a look at the S&W M&P series.  They've got really nice ergos (for me anyhow), are rugged and if you look around hard/long enough, you can find them new for right about $400.

Its reliable.  Never had it malfunction in probably 1000 rounds. The SR9c is cool because its a compact but can have a full sized grip if you run the big mag (takes the same mags as the SR9.)

Best thing to do is handle a few guns and see which feels best.

Most of the P series is fairly similar.  They are rock solid guns.  None of them will win beauty contests, but they perform excellently.  Massad Ayoob raved about them when they came out, he called them "the Brick"..

I have a P94 in 9mm I'm selling if you're interested.  I have like 6 mags with it too.  I make you a deal.

New or good condition used is ok.  If it's been properly taken care of.

Not stuck on anything particular honestly.  I don't want *too* small though.  I handled a Taurus that was really thin, but I didn't like it.  I've had my hands on several.  I like how Sig feels, the Ruger feels good too.  I didn't like Glock as much in my hand.  Haven't had my hands on a Beretta or Springfield yet.

Ducatiz - Drop me a PM when you get time with what you're talking about.
