Pics like this always make me wonder what the parts go to.

It was like that when I worked at the fab shop too. We'd build this 'stuff' and had no idea what it was used for.

Sometimes we'd find out, and when you saw the finished product you'd say 'wow'. :o

I'm still trying to find pics of a 'camera' part we made for the Smithsonian. It was about 5' ish in diameter and weighed close to a ton. I had to paint it.

edit...
I think it's part of this...

or maybe this...

Made some changes.

The lathe that started it all was having trouble making things round, and flat.  The Mazak I bought new in 2012 saw it's workload drop way off so I sold them both off and replaced them with a new Okuma LB3000EXMYWBB.

That's a 10" chuck main spindle, live milling tools, a Y axis (for off center stuff) an 8" chuck sub spindle and the big bore option.

Really, who can say no to a big bore?

The live tools on this machine are equal to what I have available on my vertical cnc mill.  6000rpm and 10hp.  It's nuts.

We can make stuff in the main spindle then have the sub spindle rapid in and clamp, the main unclamps and the sub takes it back to the other side of the machine where we can cut on the back side of the part.

Many things we do that take 2-4 operations (and setups) can now be done in one.  Raw parts go in, a finished part goes in a box.

I'll try to get some pics and video.  It's super cool to watch it transfer parts from one spindle to the other.

I've had this thing about 6 weeks and I already want another, larger one. . .

The larger one in that series doesn't have a sub spindle. [evil]

Have you switched teams to Okuma?

Have you switched teams to Okuma?

I've always liked Okuma. I've had two older Okuma lathes for the last year and a half and they just kick ass. One of them I ran for the original owners when I worked for them 13 years ago and it still holds tenths.

Mazak is dead to me now.

Someday, even if I have a hundred machines they will not be allowed in the door. I have a long memory when I feel like I was wronged.

I still have my mazak mill, which I love. When it dies I'll buy an M560V.

So, yes. I support Okuma now because they support me :)

Bitter pills are hard to swallow...never mind forget.

I don't blame you.

Not for the video.

I do most milling dry anyway. Reduces thermal cracking at the cutting edge.
