Reminds me of the first time I saw an early HD crank.
<said silently to myself> "WTF. That couldn't run for more than 5 minutes. Seriously."

They look like they'd go wonky real quick. That centre pin cops heaps.

The thin nut and short taper just blew my mind.
They do work, it's remarkable.

What did I just buy for my Ducati?
... well, I just bought a 2011 Monster 796!
I haven't been riding anything for a while. What a great bike! Now it's a question of what I am ABOUT to buy for it. Firstly, does anyone have any idea of the best place to get tank fairings / the plastic cover things over the tank? I previously had a 2007 M695 and I hate the way they did this on the next generation Monsters. The one benefit, I'd imagine, is that it's cheaper to change colors. I'd like to change from white to red/white/black - that look is so sharp. Unfortunately, I've found very few places on the internet selling those fairings and none in that color for a 796. (Are they all universal between the 696/796/1100 and across all the years of those?)

They're probably the same. Check that by looking at a few different bike's parts numbers (ducati.com a.s.o.)
Red/white/black was called Corse and I agree, it's a very nice look

New Michelin Power RS front and Pilot Road 5 for the rear.
That and the new chain and sprockets made for a super enjoyable ride today.
Lots of confidence in the front, even though not properly scrubbed in. Rear felt much better than with the Pilot Road 4.

So I finally got too old for the monster ergos, and bought these
https://www.bellissimoto.com/parts/rearsets-footpegs/footpegs/aella-variable-step-bar-kit-monster-1
Set the pegs slightly down and mostly back (20mm adjustment bar), and my legs feel so much better. They sit a bit wider as well so my heel is not hitting the exhaust heat shield anymore. Much grippier than the stockers and very solid mounting. I think my positive experience with these is going to encourage me to explore some handlebars to further move the ergos into "old man" territory.
I also finally got my new tail bag from Kickstarter (ALMS NYC).
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/almsnyc/12l-motorcycle-tail-bag
Just the right size for the monster tail, and exactly holds my 2 thermoflasks and sammich for bringing lunch to work.

Yup...a 91 900...I think it's a 91. It was Ddan's bike.
I think I'm going to move the flat slides, and the top end with the high comps, to my Monster motor. I'll swap motors because the SS motor has the really uncommon short crankshaft. Left side covers are relative unobtanium. For a track bike crashing is a given so I don't want to trash that motor.

Good move, that SS has the 300W alternator before the 350W version came out in late 92 - early 93. Pretty thin on the ground for sure. My '92 SL900 had the 300W alternator and it struggled to charge a Shorai with the electric fuel pump. Flatslides will be good at the track. You'll be glad they're 41's as the 39's bite pretty hard off the bottom. I would agree with some that 39's are better on the road with part throttle inputs. I reckon the 41's come on softer down low and let you get on the gas earlier and harder, before they give their stronger top end power. That's given both have good tuning.
It's the track bike I hoped to finish my track era with.
