News to me.
But as I always say, "must be true if it's on the interwebs".

This might clear things up a bit:
http://www.trucktrend.com/news/163-1206-toyota-hilux-in-the-us/
My guess is as long as there is a Tacoma there will be no Hi-Lux in the US other than maybe gray market.

Hiluxes are incredibly good sellers here in the down under!
A 4x4 diesel four door ute (short for utility - you say truck) has always been a vehicle I'd love to own.
Maybe when we replace the GLW's diesel Mondeo (Fusion).

the mini duramax in the colorado is pretty damn powerful for that little sucker, it almost makes the 6+ liter duramax diesels seem excessive, especially since the hauling between the two isnt much of a difference to warrant double the displacement. maybe they will have a classic half ton that doenst look like its a ton.
hopefully toyota will come out with a diesel to compete with the colorado..oneday.

I dunno.
Let's take a look at the sales results:
March 2017 - MTD
Tacoma - 16,728
Colorado - 8,426
Canyon - 2,490
Frontier - 6,937
March 2017 - YTD
Tacoma - 43,493
Colorado - 22,358
Canyon - 7,527
Frontier - 15,566
I'd say Tacoma is "competing" will the others pretty well at the moment.

if you want to be very specific with words, i did say a toyota diesel (tacoma that is) to compete with the colorado.. diesel that is.
I say that because this thread is about the small diesel market. I want more options.

Toyota is way too conservative for that. They just put a new engine in the Tacoma and they'll run that configuration for a decade if the past is any indicator.
Nissan might have something up it's sleeve for the new frontier. They had cummins prototype a while back.
I would think the new Ranger will have a eco boost. It will be interesting to see what kind of power and MPG they tune it for.
Competition is heating up which should be good for us.

I found this article from last fall.
http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/190329-diesel-update-guess-how-many-diesel-colorados-and-canyon-gm-sells/
Kind of interesting comments in there, particularly about how expensive the diesel versions of Colorado & Canyon are (i.e., you can't get a stripped down truck with one), due to the need for the manufacturer having to recoup the development costs somehow.
At that point in 2016, the DuraMax represented 7.4% of Colorado and Canyon builds.
My point with the sales figures is that even without a diesel option, Tacoma nearly outsells the other three options combined.
Toyota has the technology. It is just a matter of justifying the cost and maintaining the sales pace while hitting the necessary take rate targets.
Oh, and that pesky aspect of training technicians to work on a diesel engine (when we already have a nationwide technician shortage) that hasn't been in Toyota's US lineup in over 30 years.

yeah, if you're selling that many more than anyone else, you have no reason to change your Secret Recipe
they should just drop the warranty too, i bet people would still buy them.

They have priced the diesel option just way outside the realm of practicality. For the money, you might as well buy a decent half ton. The torque and small mileage improvement is just not enough to justify.

That looks cool as hell, but my first thought was "That looks like a whole lot of weight aft of the rear axle".

Agreed. Though it's hard to justify the 1/2 ton when your hauling air most of the time. Some of the 1/2 tons are creeping up there in MPGs though. You have to drive ALOT to warrant the diesel option. I drive 15k a year and that would only save about $250 in fuel annually over the V6 gas Colorado. If you tow a lot i could see it making more sense. YMMV
