Note that you can call AT&T and have them help disable 3G if you prefer longer battery life, but wasn't the point of the new upgrade to have 3G capability?

my keyboard just served me with paternity suit.

you can't disable 3g right on the phone?

I think you can, but I'm not sure how. It might be out on the web, but I know for a fact that you can call them and they'll walk to through it.

Yes, you can do it on the phone and it takes about 5 seconds.

so how bad is the new battery life?  i have one on order to replace my old iphone...but if the battery life is any shittier than the already shitty battery on the original, i will cancel
If you love your bike, set it free.
If it comes back to you, you've
probably high-sided.

Magnus

i've read the battery life is awful...  but i don't have first hand experience.

It lasts me all day, but I don't talk all day long either.  I leave everything on (3G, Wi-Fi and push email) and it lasts me from 9am to at least 10pm when I plug it back in.  If I were making calls all day or watching video all day, I'm sure it wouldn't last as long, but for my general purposes it's fine.  I would say worst case scenario, maybe you have to plug it into the car charger after work if you've been on it all day.

I had mine give me the "Only 10% battery life remains" warning late Sunday night while browsing the World Superbike website during the second race - it hadn't been charged since Friday afternoon - I hadn't made many voice calls (maybe 6 or 8 calls total, almost certainly less than 10 mins of airtime), but I did spend most of 3 hours using wifi for email, web, twitter, maps, youtube etc at a cafe on Saturday, and quite a lot of other "showing off" since many of my friends still hadn't seen the new one. I currently run it with pretty much everything switched on except bluetooth (which I only turn on when I rarely need it).

Gizmodo (admittedly staunch Apple fanbois) and PCWorld both have articles up which says the 3G iPhone beats many other other common smartphone for battery life:

(they could just be different reports on the same test, and seem to both leave out the CrackBerry...)

i'm still amazed by the battery life on my 1st gen iphone...
i talk on it occasionally, but use email and internet all day.

I got notice last night that AT&T got the iphone in stock and shipped the one I ordered.  I should be able to go pick it up after work today.  I'm pretty excited.  This will be my first foray into smartphones.  I can't wait to have the internets on my phone.

OTOH, I'm a little dismayed to be leaving T-Mobile.  I've been a customer of theirs for about 10 years (since they were Voicestream in NJ) and for some bizarre reason I feel bad about leaving.

I have to say I was disappointed with my 1st gen iphone battery life when I first got it.  Of course, I was use to non-smartphone nokias that would last a week if you didn't use them much.  Once I figured out that I should turn off wifi if I wasn't using it, and once I realized that I was getting 5 hours of usage on it (mostly internet), I have to say the battery life is more than acceptable.  I'd never call it amazing like some have though.

If the 3G battery is a lot worse, I'll probably wait until they bring out the 32GB version to see if they upgrade the battery.

How much faster is the net on the 3G version in real life?  I know they say twice, but how noticable is the difference?
