I do quite a bit of reading and it seems like military snipers use Schmidt and Bender scopes that are 16x50. Does that mean the "zoom" is a lot better on one of these? I can't ever see spending 4g on a scope, but it is nice to look!

We (SOF) use Leupold and Horus.

The only used ones I have are cheap, never fired and only dropped once though.  ;)

I have a vari-x II  3-9x50 on my 700 PSS.  The reticle is way too thick, it covers the bullseye at 100.  Drives me nuts.  Go for a fine plex.

So the 3-9x50..

3-9 is the optical focus? 50 is the reticle size?

DarkStaR

I got a Leupold VX-R in a 4-12x40, and I kinda wish I bought something more.

Leupold is good and all, but there are still better scopes for the money.

I wouldn't mind any of the following...to name just a few:
US Optics
Trijicon
Nightforce
Vortex
Nikon

Any opinions on Millet scopes?

I heard a lot of good things about the Vortex. I'm seriously looking at a 4-12X40 for my .300 Win Mag

It might be 'cause they are local

but

up here they are the standard

I went with Leupold, because from my research, they're one of the "better" "big name" scope manufactures out there, and most importantly, have a lifetime transferable warranty.  But, some of your money will be paying for their name.

Not too sure about that Redfield purchase though...   :-\

On a large caliber rifle, just make sure you buy a scope with a lifetime warranty.

My scope sustains 3 significant shock waves with every round fired, so the lifetime warranty was a must.

Leupold is as sure thing, but with enough research, there are others out there that are just as good, if not better for the same money

oh yeah, if anything, look for "Made in USA"!!!   [thumbsup]

3 shock waves?

Can you elaborate for me?  This is not something I know much about.

I have a S&B on my AI .308.  It is an amazing scope, but I wouldn't spend that type of $$ again.  Looking through the F-Class results, lots of people are using Sightron scopes.  Optics planet has them for great prices.  You can get a 10-50x60 for less than $1000  :o  They do have one major downside; no zero stop.  You will just have to remember how many rotations you turned that elevation knob  [thumbsup]

I'm planning on picking one up soon for a .338 build.

That being said, buy a Schmidt & Bender or US Optics if the price doesn't scare you off.

1.  bang
2.  bolt hits rear of receiver
3.  bolt hits barrel face/front of receiver.

on large bores, that bolt is a big chunk of metal.

I'm actually going with an XLR Industries stock.  No bedding to deal with  ;D  A remmington receiver is likely.  I need a rifle with more balls than a .308.  I have killed a buffalo with the .308, but I felt like it was just enough.
