I like old cars and trucks.

That's exactly what it is...
the one in the pic is a '66 MK I.
The most fun 4 cyl car I've ever driven...
except for maybe an Elan. ;)
I'll be satisfied to see my Chevelle just move under it's own power one day.
E-type jaguar ... that's not a supercar is it? Enzo Ferrari is rumored to have
said it was the most beautiful car ever made.
I've always been a fan of early 70's pickups.
Of course they would need to be done up for performance.
Oh and also, I'm not sure if it qualifies as vintage but I would like to reward my '77 Wagoneer by making it run again after it's finished with it's current mission of holding up a section of wall and roof in part of my garage. I envision a Cummins going into it, no clue how difficult it would be as it's only a silly idea in head at the moment and like most ideas of mine may never hit the ground as reality.

this is my headbanger. parked in front of my aunt's house the day i bought it from her estate.
had 20,000 original miles on it in 1984. original tires. inside was cherry. garaged the while time, it was just dusty. sigh.. wrapped it around a telephone pole and ended up in hospital for a month.

Back in the old days, my high school girl friend had one of those Ford van trucks posted in the OP - that thing was one scary ride. Three obtainable vintage dream cars of mine are:

My 1967 Jeepster Commando. It's one I'd always wanted and then I was able to pick this one up for $800 with a fresh rebuild on the original 225 V6, new tires, and a half tank of gas.

I had a lot of fun with that car.
I also had a 69 with a 428 CJ. The car was a sleeper. Had no emblems except for small Mustang script on the fenders. You could tell something was up because the rear tires and wheels were twice as wide as the fronts. There's a retired cop in Hartford CT that still remembers the smoke show I bet. Yeah, though I have no idea what year.
When I was in high school I had an after school job at the mall. Every day I would walk to the mall and parked on the outermost part of the lot was a Cord like this one. It was clean, straight, but not restored (well, at least not for many years anyway).
This was 1974, I was 15 years old, and I fell in love with the thing.

My brother is in the process of building one. I hope he finishes it before either of us die (it's taking forever).
That's been on my list since I was a kid. 30-40k can build you a really nice one.
Not terribly vintage, but I've always lusted after a 1993 Mustang Cobra R

The Tipo 33 was my wall paper for like 2 years. Something about that car is just so F'n sexy, though I prefer the one with 2 lights inside the bubble.
I know someone who owns one, and I have touched it. [drool] This was about 12 years ago and I think he paid 850K for it. Only 13 in the world.

I prefer the dual headlight version also, but this was such a pretty picture, I didn't search further. Now they go for around $1,197,964.56. (750,000.00 British Pounds Sterling)

I can read the title just fine. These are my dream vintage cars. Emphasis on DREAM. The only exception I could see is maybe the Tipo 33 Stradale could be construed as a super car, but there weren't enough made to warrant that claim.
Instead of dream car, you could have wrote " Car you'd like to have without spending too much money to purchase/fix up in your spare time."
In that case, I'll take a 1987 Prelude 2.0Si, 5-speed in black. ;)

that's cool. to each his own. the market voted otherwise. the Bug was made until 2003, over 21 million made.. and the bus in its various incarnations was made until the early 90s. The Caravelle was the same body with Golf engine.
People love them. I restored them thru college to make money. Simplistic mechanical design, but amazing engineering. Say what you will, but no one has a car/truck that even comes close to the cultural impact, innovation and interesting design.

My friend "borrowed" the Daytona one Friday while the bros were on duty and we drove to Riverside Raceway for the NASCAR Winston West road race...January 1974. It was like driving a pit pass! They let us in the gate without paying and let us park in the paddock area. Got autographs from Gurney, Yarborough, Petty, Pearson, McGriff. Pretty cool stuff for an 18 year old.

Dang!
Love those cars. Weird/sad story it being Veterans Day and all. When I was in high school some neighbors down the street had a son that joined the Army and went to Viet Nam. He had a 1970 yellow Superbird. The parents kept it in the back driveway covered with a tarp. I made it a point to walk our family dog down that street as often as I could. Any time I saw the parents I would go up and ask if I could look at the car. They were very nice and always said yes. I never saw it move or them ever driving it. I so badly wanted to ask them to take me for a drive but never did. I was hoping they would offer. I knew asking to drive it would be foolish so I kept my mouth shut hoping for just a ride.
Later I found out their son had been killed in Nam. I went off to college and for a long time when I came home I would look and it still would be there with the tarp getting old and ratty over time. After spending summer away at school I came home and they and the car were gone. They had moved and I have always wondered what happened to that mint, stock yellow 'Bird.

One of those brothers was also responsible for my love of motorbikes. He owned a CB750...his roommate (yet another fireman) owned a CB550. They would let us borrow the bikes when they were on duty (yup, these guys walked the line on contributing to the delinquency of minors). My friend rode his bro's 750 and I rode the 550, which I consider my first bike. All we had to do was return them cleaned with a full tank of gas. Good times.
no supercars..........hmmmmmmmm does that make my dream car out of the running? Back in the day I am sure they would have been considered a supercar, fast handled well and look good.
Austin Healy 3000 GT.Still a very desireable car. Completely out of my league but perhaps one day.
I drive a supercar at the moment. A 1992 Honda Civic complete with dents and scratches, and the optional radio. Due to the theft of my radio I now own the 1992 ghetto model........thats the highly desireable model that comes without sounds(other than worn out mechanical noises) leaky door seal, Optional front fender dent, key scratches and chipped windshield. On a really good day the windscreen wiper motor works. This is a super car, fast handles and fun to drive. It also has a fully operating electric rear left door window. The others are broken. [thumbsup]
The best thing about this car is it is paid for. Its mine and there is no car payment!

The bad part about my year Ranger is the weak-ass 5-speed transmission. The TC's had BW T-5's so they're a lot stronger...

I dream plenty about vintage sports sedans like the BMW 2002tii & Datsun 510, and almost nearly pulled the trigger on a "free" basket case Porsche 914.
But the dream vehicle that I've invested the most time & thought into is one that we picked up over the summer:
It's an '85 Toyota FJ60; the so-far unrealized part of the dream includes a diesel motor swap and more outfitting for desert/overland use. I used to own this one, a 1973 FJ40, so the current motor is one I'm pretty comfortable digging into:
And like most dreams, living with it day-to-day in the wide-awake world has its challenges; let's just say it's surprisingly able to fill the bill as our only 4-wheel vehicle despite the 250,000+ miles on the clock.

Fortunately, some of those used Toyota diesels are starting to find their way into the U.S. parts market -- but the downside of Toyota & most other manufacturers giving up on diesels in this market is that there just aren't that many mid-size diesel options that'd fit in this vehicle. Most of the U.S.- built diesel truck motors are simply too big to fit reasonably inside the Cruiser's engine compartment.

Working on aquiring one of these as we speak.
cummins b series fits right into a FJ. Not a cheap conversion but they will fit and work great. Of course there are major mods to do but you will have a bullet proof motor in your FJ. Figure on 20 large for everything including beefing the suspension to handle the extra weight.
For 20k you can drob an FJ body on a shortened diesel truck chasis
For 20k you can fly to Europe, buy a used diesel FJ, boat it back and pay an RI to convert it to american standards.

...except for maybe an Elan. ;)
Sorry for jumping into this thread so late - I had a '67 Elan SE drophead coupe (I think that is Brit-talk for convertible) and it still is the most fun car I've ever driven. It had ball and socket joints for door hinges and under hard cornering the driver's side door would pop right off. It had the optional 3.55 rear end and it was a huge improvement over the standard ratio which I think was 3.9 or so.
Absolutely the most amazing car. The faster it went the more stable it got. I bought it from a friend, wrecked. Fixed it, wrecked it again, fixed it, wrecked it again and decided to use some discretion and sold it. Wish I had it back.
The thread title includes trucks so I thought I'd post one of mine. It's a '59 FWD Model 228 Dump Truck. For the uninitiated, FWD stands for The Four Wheel Drive Company and they invented 4WD a long time ago. I got the truck free from a retired contractor neighbor. Had to do some bodywork and painting but it was surprisingly mechanically OK, other than the air brake system which needed some work. The motor is an International gas powered 450 cubic inch inline 6. I've thought about turbocharging it but doubt if I'll get around to it. I have a Boss V-plow for the winter so she actually earns her keep.

I used to have a '63 Ford 1 ton that started life as a wrecker and I found a '62 dump body and converted it.
I sold it because I wasn't using it and sitting was doing it no good.
The guy I sold it to killed it in short order. :'(
That's sad, sorry he killed it.
My family owns a trucking company (18 wheelers, haul heavy bldg. materials from plants to end users... distributors, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) My older brother is the sole owner now. He used to have a nicely restored 1929 Ford Model AA flatbed truck. Sad, but I honestly don't know if he still has it. The company was started 1918 by my grandfather using mule team pulled wagons. He eventually used the Model As and AAs in service. I have also always had a fond spot for old trucks. The office walls were lined with pics from over the decades. Cool stuff. [thumbsup]

As Im driving this sweet machine down the winding park roads, at a civilized pace, (there was traffic) my mind was racing. How can I make this car happen??
It had a few quirks, the main one being the cramped footwell. Everything else, I could get past.
I took a right off Beach Drive and into my neighborhood to take her home. All of a sudden I lost power, pulled over and rolled to a stop. I looked underneath the car and saw THIS!

HOLY F! Worst test drive scenerio. The owner is going to SHIT! I just bought myself an effed up Porsche!!
I called the owner and he immediately drove over to where I was. Told him right off the bat that I wasnt ragging it whatsoever and I felt hideous that this happened on my watch.
He looked under this gorgeous machine, looked up at me and said, "I just replaced the CV boots last week, guess I forgot to torque the bolts, dont worry about it."
I didnt buy it because who knows what else he worked on. Although, I think not buying it is going to haunt me.
i thought i was the only one.
i have had 3 type 3s in my life, two squarebacks and a '63 notchback. my first sqbk was a '71 model with the bosch EFI. i ripped it out and put in dual carbs and then had a miserable time balancing them. i met a guy who had worked on vws all his life, he said put it back in, i'll tune it. sure enough. ran like a top for another 5 years with that funky FI system.
it had mechanical points off the distributor which timed the injectors. it didn't use the regular distributor, it had two sets of points one for the plugs and one for the injectors which fit on a separate plate below. very unusual.

I don't think so. The Chrysler flathead 6 that I'm thinking of was an antiquated thing, Google told me it was introduced in 1932 and continued in automotive service until '59. It was also used as an industrial engine to power things like pumps up until the 1970's.

sounds just like the AMC 6.. lol
QuoteSometimes referred to as the 196 engine, this engine was originally designed by Nash in the 1930s as a flathead, and redesigned as an OHV engine in 1956. The flathead version was discontinued for 1956â€"1957, but reemerged in 1958 as the economy engine for the "new" Rambler American. When the engine was changed to an OHV configuration the water pump was moved from the left side of the engine (driven by a shaft extending from the back of the generator) to the front above the timing chain. When the flathead model was reintroduced it also received the new water pump. Equipped with such high quality parts as forged crankshafts and connecting rods, these engines earned a reputation for remarkable durability. The flathead, however, was prone to the typical flathead problem of overheating under sustained heavy load. This was from the hot exhaust traveling through the cylinder block to the exhaust manifold.

I've been around the vintage racecar industry for decades -- thus have sampled some of the great supercars over the years.
Here are two cars built upon "normal" chassis with more pedestrian underpinnings I'd love to have in my garage.

Love those early Volvos as well. My family owed one of those Citroen TAs. Just before we left Argentina, dad bought one so that we could drive around the country visiting and saying goodbye to family and friends. Previous to this, our only mode of familial transportation was a Lambretta scooter (but that's a whole different story). The TA had a hole in the floorboards and burned oil like a 2-stroke.
Owned an Amazon (known here as a 122) wagon and a Saab 2 stroke. Enjoyed them both.

Owned an Amazon (known here as a 122) wagon and a Saab 2 stroke. Enjoyed them both.
The old 94's were great cars.
I grew up with the Ford Granada .....It was a pretty decent car all in all. The police used them for IRU's ( Instant Response Units) they had a pretty big motor in them for the UK and were reliable.
Another car I was fond of when I was a kid was the Police version of the Rover 3.5Litre late 1970's earluy 1980's. Then the ultimate car from that era was a BMW 633CSI in Red. What else? I am a girl! [laugh]

I think I better stop there.. [drool]
If Saab would stop trying to be the Swedish Toyota Camry, and made stuff like this nowadays they wouldn't be chinese owned.
[drool]
Although, at 55 hp, they'd need a better powerplant. Give me this car with 200 hp and we are in bidness.

Spyker bought them or are the Chinese a silent partner in that?

My mistake, I was thinking of Volvo. You are indeed correct, Spyker owns Saab now. Volvo is owned by CHinese company "Chery"
..the point is valid though.... nobody buys a Saab coz they want a vanilla motorcar... they need to put the personality back in their vehicles if they're gonna generate any interest in their offerings. The re-bodied GM Vectras are just soooooooo desperately dull.... even with a relocated ignition key-swtich a Saab it still aint.
Gimme a reason to want one again Saab.

I think that will be Spyker's intention, can't just undo GM's wrongdoings overnight though.

No argument there, it just seemed like a fun car to drive hard. I don't recall the hp number differences between the 2-stroke & V4, i am pretty sure it would hardly matter [laugh]. I've heard of several owner turbo'ed cars, Bud Clark is one.

All of the ones built during GM's time where probably not the fault of the designers, but more likely the bean counters. Can everyone say brand label...

They were going to last year, but it never came to fruition.
Spyker did what they couldn't.

They wanted to but wanted a loan deal from the Swedish government.
The socialists in the Swedish government said "Nej tack! businesses should sink or swim based on their business model and the market."

Spyker is a better fit, they have more experience mass producing vehicles than Koenigsegg.
K makes like 50 cars per year had has about 75 employees.
Been in a modified '67 Sonnett going up the Angeles Crest Highway in SoCal which was slightly built...
The few year old 911 couldn't believe his eyes as we passed him on the outside of a hairpin turn. Best part? He couldn't get back by us!
Thanks again Dennis, had a BLAST! :D

As much as I always wanted to love that car, I just couldn't. I love the motor, and interior but... eh. Something about those grills over the headlights and hood scoop that drives me crazy. [bang]
